Whitmore - 1891 in Barming/Maidstone
« on: Friday 15 July 05 09:02 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out why my GG Grandmother moved from North London to Barming nr Maidstone in the last years of her life as there are no known family ties in the area. Sarah Pridgeon nee Whitmore moved to Barming in about 1885 and died there in 1890. she lived in South Street by St Margaret's church where she was buried.

Can anyone tell me if there were any Whitmore families living in the area in 1891 as this might help me tie up a link to other members of the family. The Whitmores originated from Redhill/Reigate/Horley area and it is possible some moved east to Kent.

i have only very scant but quite detailed info on some Redhill Whitmores.my Great Granny , a whitmore by marrriage , was fanny lavinia Whitmore (born Lucas 1877). She was married to William john whitmore in 1899 and they lived in 77 St johns , Redhill. He is described as a bricklayer in most of the census entries. He was I think according to my granny , from Irish stock (Cork)on his mother's side"an Irish biddy"so she said , but I can't find any trace of his father who was also called william john whitmore . On their wedding certificate it says they originally lived at 7 Hooley road , earlswood , reigate , and on the census it states william  was born in Kennington , London. he had 2 sisters , according to my auntie, both married , and 2 daughters , my granny Ivy lily mary whitmore and my great aunt kathleen (named after the irish biddy ?) so the whitmore name died out on that branch when they married.
I have some photos. I have a picture of a whitmore in police officer's uniform (19th century), not sure who it is.Also quite a few of william whitmore , young and old.
Not sure if you have made any connections with other whitmore relsatives in your search , or if this is helpful , but would be pleased to hear from you or any other whitmore searchers if this sounds like the right redhill whitmores .

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I have William and Fanny and also your Gran Ivy on my spreadsheet of Redhill/Reigate/Horley Whitmores but have not been able to relate them to my family tree yet. Most of the Whitmore's in Surrey originated from Horley and gradually spread out to Redhill/Reigate and a few to London. I also have a Kathleen Alice Whitmore born in 1905 is this your great aunt.

I have several hundred Whitmore's and happy to help piece together some more of your family history on the Whitmore side. It is quite possible that we are related in a distant way as for many years they kept quite local and all seem to be labourers, bricklayers or plasterers. I'm intersted in the policeman as I have also seen some photo's of Whitmore's in the police before.

Kind Regards
Ned

Hi Ned ,
So sorry not to have replied. Have only just logged on again.yes , kathleen whitmore was my great aunt , my granny Ivy's younger sister. I have pictures of Ivy , kathleen and their parents (William Whitmore the bricklayer) which I could send you , also of the unidentified policeman. My great granny , Fanny Lavinia Whitmore , lived at 77 st john's redhill until she died in the 1960's, and her stepmother and stepsister ran a little shop at 9 st john's of which I also have pictures. It is still there, md still recognisable.
Let me know if you'd like to see the photos to see if there is some resemblance.kathleen (Kaggers)died before fanny , of lung cancer , was married to Norman , but had no children. she looks to be small , busy and bird like , like my great granny was , who never stood still . I even have cine film of her weeding granny's garden in Reigate . Granny was more the Jewish princess in looks , dark and more substantially built.

Hi,

Unfortunately your sarah is not the one. My GG Grandmother was born in 1821 and is descended from another branch of the Whitmores. Thomas and Susanna (Frusanna) are descended from Whitmores in Horley and I still have not found a convincing link between your line of Whitmores and mine although I'm sure there is one back in the 1700s.

Thank you for replying and if you want any information on your branch of the family I have quite a large list of Whitmores in and around Horley, Redhill and Reigate at my disposal.
