- there was a church at Abbingdon that Cromwall converted into a stable during civil war-

Very unlikely - the church was used as a stable (as were others) but Cromwell would almost certainly have had nothing to do with it. He was never in the garrison at Abingdon nor was he a senior enough commander at that time to have any overall control. The guilty party was probably called Browne.

Tales of the Civil War often give Cromwell credit for everything Parliamentary forces did - in reality it was only in the closing months of the 1st Civil War (1642-1646) that he rose to high rank for most of the conflict he commanded little more than a cavalry regiment.

Boy! Am I ever slow........ I am getting buried under emails and have put off too long too much 'stuff'- interesting stuff but I get easily distracted and when it comes to genealogy, I definitely have ADD!!! But anyway, I am going through my old emails and came across a mention of James Williams' butcher shop in Abingdon. Could someone please refresh my memory of which James Williams this is? As a short refresher I descend from Samuel and Mary Fletcher Williams. They are my gggg grandparents. And hello again to everyone!! Hope you are enjoying your summer/ winter, whichever applies to you. Judy

Hi,

I've just come across this discussion. I too have an interest in finding out the connection of Williams in Oxon/Berks with my family (Clinch). I have several ancestors who were christened John Williams Clinch.

John Williams I, b 1878, Witney, d 1871 Witney
He married Elizabeth Philippa Hill Cripps -- hense the second reason for my interet in this discussion!
JW 1 was a brewer and banker in Witney (Clinch & Co)

John Williams Clinch II, b 1814, Witney, d 1861 Witney

John Williams Clinch III, b 1839, Witney, d 1905 Douglas IOM

John Williams Druce Clinch IV, b 1871 Douglas, d 1921, London

The Williams name seems to have stuck for some generatios, so they must have had an impact on the Clinch family - I'd love to find out more.

Regards

Craig

I too have just come across this message by googling
'Theodora Williams, Kingston Bagpuize'

Theodora may have been my 5G grandmother, if I can establish the connection.

My 3 Ggrandmother was Ann Payton, born 1816, Shoreditch to John and Ann Payton.
I have been informed that this was John Payton of Abingdon and his 3rd wife, Ann Blissett of Wantage, and that John's parents were Thomas Payton, and Theodora Williams of Kingston Bagpuize.

I have not as yet confirmed this information, but it looks likely, from this thread.  I have just put a new post about this family, asking if anyone recognises them - well looks like at least one other person does!!

Hello sugarfizzle and craigcc! I am sorry that I am so late in replying but time just got away from me! What else can I say? I do think that there probably is a connection between your, craigcc, John Williams and the Clinch line but I can't find it in what I have. I will send the details you have given to someone else researching Williams. Sugarfizzle- I couldn't find any Paytons in what I have but will do the same for you that I am doing for craigcc. I invite you both to visit my website at www.ourfamilynearandfar.net and take a look. You can contact me via that website if you like. Take care, TGIF, Judy

Hi Jenny
Very interested that you have a picture of Martha Collier.  Recently discovered that she and Charles Hemming are my gg grandmother and grandfather.  Would love to see a copy if that's possible, plus any information that you have on them.

Many thanks
Clare
