my James Williams m Matilda Cook. Daughter Sarah Jane b1850 Abingdon. Father Benjamin Williams 29/5/1770-1/12/1846.  Sarah Edgington b 1779 d 19/12/1848.  I found James b 1812 in Abingdon in 1871 with Sarah Jane and son Benjamin b 1848 Northcourt. If anyone has 1841 census for Reading area they should both be on it..  The tree I have shows Benjamin b 1770 and sister Elizabeth m Edward Leader who d 27/10/1833.  It also  mentions Martha m 1824 James Collier.  other marriages (no dates) are Edward=Sarah Whiting,Sarah=Josiah Fletcher (found on 1851 census in Norwich),Theophilius=? Bailey, and Hannah=? Waters.  It also goes back several generations to James Williams b 1674.  This seems to be in Bampton/Coate area of Oxfordshire.
The eldest child that I found for Josiah Fletcher was Benjamin Edgington Fletcher b about 1837.

I have a Theodora Williams who would have been born 1745 approx marrying Thomas Payton in Abingdon - I would love to find her parents.

Debbie

According to the Oxfordshire Baptism Index (http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/), we have :-

Theodora WILLIAMS, daughter of Thomas & Ann, baptised at Kingston Bagpuize in 1742

The parish registers of Kingston Bagpuize have been transcribed and indexed by this society. They are available on CD (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html) and are also freely available to consult at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies and Oxfordshire Record Office. The transcription might well give information over and above that taken from the index.

Hi OFHS    ;D  ;D  ;D

Thank you so much for that information - I have been looking for Theodora on and off for several years - I even already have your publication of the registers for Kingston Bagpuzie on Fiche and never thought to look there - having said that for some reason the pages that contain that entry are very blurred and out of focus so I am not sure I would have spotted it without being told.  Thomas & Ann seem to have had 6 children baptised in Kingston starting with a Leonard Williams in 1736 - sadly they didn't marry there so the search goes on now for their marriage (I can't see it in my copy of the Oxfordshire marriage index so perhaps it was in North Berkshire), however the name Leonard seems to suggest a connection with the Williams's of Iffley so I think I shall purchase that disk to add to my collection and see what I can find from there - again thank you so much - yo have made my day

Hi Judy - and all

I am getting really excited about this as I think with a bit of work it may all fit together.  I started this afternoon going through some of my records for Williams - with reference to the facts already mentioned.  When I looked at Kingston Bagpuzie on the map I realised how close it is to Bampton & Shifford I think that 'my' Thomas married to Ann and born about 1710 is very likly to be related to your Williams family.  Jen you mentioned a tree going back to James Williams born 1674 - can you see any possibles for my Thomas Williams on it??

I have this from the 1841 census for Northcourt for you - In case you don't already have it
James Williams aged 29 Farmer Y
Matilda WIlliams aged 28 Y
James Williams aged 2 Y
Matilda Williams aged 6m Y
+ 2 servants

nest door (or possibly even in the same building)

Elizabeth Leader 70 Ind N
Elizabeth Collier 16 Ind N
Rachel Emberlin 25 F.S.
William Constable aged 20 M.S.

and From 1851 - Northcourt again
James Williams H Mar 39 Farmer 540 acres emp 31 men born Reading
Matilda Williams Dau 10
Edward Cook Williams Son 9
John William Son 6
Sarah Jane Williams  Dau 2
Mary Jane Williams Visitor 16 born Reading
John Nicholson Visitor 16 Farmer born GLS Lydney?
Emma Payton Serv 20 House serv born Abingdon
Charlotte Woodbury Serv 24 House Servant born MArcham
again next entry
Elizabeth Coombe Leader H Wid 81 Blind Annuitant born Bampton
+ 2 servants

James & Matildas eldest son is at school in Reading - I think the other Williams there is probably a cousin

James Leader Williams aged 11 born Northcourt Abingdon
Charles Bailey Williams aged 14 born Reading

From the BVRI I found details of three of the children of Benjemin Williams & Sarah (nee Edgington)
Frederick Williams bapt 15 Nov 1813 Reading
John Octavious Williams bapt 16th June 1813 Reading
Hannah Phillips Williams bapt 30th Jan 1817 Reading

So it really does look as though Elizabeth Leader was the aunt of James Williams (b 1812 Reading) the son of Benjemin Williams & Sarah (Edgington) - can I ask where you got the other marriage of Benjemin to Elizabeth Buckland from Judy? perhaps she died and he married again

 :-\

Thats it so far - I will see what else I can come up with

- Reading St Giles - London Road

Benjamin Williams 70 Ind N
Sarah Williams 60 Y
Hannah Williams 20 Y
Sarah Brooker F.S. Y

Hi

The information I have is James Williams  b 1674 m Mary Williams, their children are on the IGI 10 in all.  The main one being Benjamin b 1718 d 1792.  i've got him married to Martha Hunt but IGI has Mary Hunt on baptisms of children  (all baptisms at Bampton or Aston or Coate)  Benjamin & Martha have at least 7 children including Elizabeth b jul 1741 who m T Coombe  (possibly b 1732 d 1819). Samuel b 1749 m Mary Fletcher. I have got a lot of marriage names but no dates for both these generations.

The data I have was from a cousin and was written down 15-20 yrs ago.

Sarah Jane Williams b 1850 Abingdon m Charles Alfred Fisher in 1874.  One of their sons married my great Aunt and they emigrated to New Zealand in about 1908 or 1910.

Hi all

I found that Benjemin Williams who died in 1792 left a will which is at Oxford R.O.  - he is given as yeoman of Cote, Bampton in the index.  The names of the prople mentioned in this will are listed in the Eureka publication - persons named in Archdeaconry Wills proved 1790-1800 (will no 208)

Wife Rebecca Williams, Son James Williams, Daughter Martha Williams, son Samuel Williams, daughter Ann Hughes - son-in-law John Hughes, daughter Mary Petty son-in-law William Petty, daughter Elizabeth Coome son-in-law Thomas Coombe and William Hurcomb nor relationshirp given.

From the OFHS marriage index Benjmein married Rebecca Robert in 1761 in Bampton - so this must have been a second marriage

From IGI Ann Williams married John Hughes 1772 in Bampton
Elizabeth Williams married Thos Coombes 1759 in Buckland Berks.

I have a copy of the baptist registers for Cote Oxfordshire and though there are many Williams entries there is very little for Benjemin and family though there is a note of the death of Elizabeth Coombe in 1829 and Mr Thomas Coombe in 1819 - non of his children appear listed in the births, nor can I find his death listed - though it is very patchy.

I wonder where whoever put those entries into the IGI got the information from  - it doesn't seem to have been from the church or chapel registers  :-\

Still I will keep digging

Debbie
