Roger Pay of Mersham
« on: Saturday 21 November 15 16:10 GMT (UK) »
I would like to find out a bit more about this man. He was the eldest son of Roger Pay of Elham, born sometime in the early 1600's. I have baptisms for all his siblings, but not him. I am guessing he may have inherited a farm in Mersham, as two of his younger brothers were left the Elham farm. In the will of Roger junior, dated 1681, he mentions two daughters, one of whom inherits his portion of the Elham farm, and he is called a yeoman. I can find no record of his marriage(s) or the baptism of daughter Mary.
I presume Mersham records are not among the Canterbury ones on Findmypast?

Thank you both. I hadn't spotted William Pay born Mersham, but I think he must have died as he is not mentioned in the father's will.

Thanks for that David. It is too late for my people, but interesting to read anyway. It also confirms that the Mersham registers are at Maidstone rather than Canterbury, so if I want to go any further with this, I shall have to make the journey!

Hi top of the hill.
I have just noticed your post about Roger Pay. We have a family in our road called Pay, we live near sandwich, which is not far from Canterbury. Any connections?
I know how frustrating this is I'm trying to do my family tree in Norfolk!
Let me know if I can help if you think they might be your Pays.
Regards Carol.

I most lilkely also descend from a Roger Pay/Paine/Pey born around 1592 in Canterbury, who married a Ann Wynne in London.
This recently discovered flock moved from Elham to Margate and ended up in Funtington Sussex Thomas and Mary Matthews, via a few Isaac's and Thomas'.
Seems like a adventurous lot?;-)
