Possible East Africa Marriage - Help Please.
« on: Friday 20 November 15 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Not sure I am posting this on the correct board???

I am helping a friend with their research and we're both at a loss as to where to look next for a marriage and birth record of a child - both possibly overseas (East Africa).

Oscar [Guise] Williams was born 15 Feb 1884 in London. His parents were Thomas Henry Williams and Ada Rose Birch. (His Parents divorced and his mother remarried - we have ALL details).
We have census information up to 1911 for Oscar (and after this date;  travel records, WW1 medal card, London Gazette announcements)  but are drawing a blank on his marriage.
Oscar was born Oscar Williams. Guise became a middle name following his mothers 2nd marriage.

Oscar Guise Williams served with the Kings African Rifles during WW1. Following the war he was a Civil Servant and travelled between England and Capetown/Dar es Salaam/Tanganyika;-
06 Jun 1921 - Arrives in London from Tanganyika - travelling alone - Gives Country of  intended place of future permanent residence as 'other parts of the British Empire'.
25 Nov 1921 - Travels from London to Marseille - travelling alone - Gives Country of intended future permanent residence as Tanganyika.
10 Nov 1927 - Arrives in London from Dar es Salaam - travelling alone
13 Jan 1935 - Arrives in Liverpool from Colombo - Travelling with his wife Dorothy Guise Williams (Full Age) Gives last place of residence as Tanganyika Territory & Africa - Gives Country of intended future permanent residence as ?? Africa under the other parts of the British Empire column.
11 Jul 1935 - Travels from London to Dar es Salaam with his wife  Dorothy (her age is smudged!, could be 30 or 50) - Gives Tanganyika as Country of intended future permanent residence
04 Dec 1937 Arrives in Southampton from Capetown with his wife Dorothy (30)  and a daughter (age 2) - Gives Country of  intended place of future permanent residence as 'other parts of the British Empire'.
13 Apr 1947 Arrive in Southampton from Capetown with his wife Dorothea (now 60) and daughter (age 10) Oscar is now retired - Gives intended place of residence as 'other parts of the British Empire'
08 Sept 1949 Arrives in London from Port Elizabeth with his wife Dorothy  (49) & daughter (13) - Gives Country of intended future permanent residence as England.

UK addresses given for
Nov 1927 Maidenhead Connaught Club.
Jun 1921, 1927 & 1949 c/o Barclays Bank London.
for 1935, 1937 1947 Liverpool

Oscar died in 1977 in Northamptonshire.

Appreciate you can't give information about living persons (We think we know who the daughter married and she could still be alive - that has yet to be proven). I hope I haven't broken any rules with the information provided...

The 1939 register has been 'exhausted' trying to find any connection to the UK addresses given...

Please, can anybody help in locating a marriage between Oscar [Guise] Williams & a Dorothy/Dorothea  ???

Many thanks for reading.

This 1921 deed pool notice says that he had been known as Oscar Guise for a while (lawful surname Williams), and would henceforth be Oscar Guise Williams.

Hi ShaunJ,

Yes, I have seen this but thanks for posting. There is quite a lot of public information about Oscar [Guise] Williams - sadly nothing that points to his marriage  ::)... yet!  Never say never  ;D

The surname Head crops up when I check the Liverpool addresses.

1935 & 1937:  8 Livingston Drive was around that time the home Ernest Wilfrid Head OBE (per 1938 Gore's). He died in 1944 (Carlton House, Lathom, Ormskirk), widow Jane Margaret Mary Head. He had spent much of his career in Ceylon. Lots of information about him on the web.

1947: Hillside. Cuckoo Lane, Gateacre. Miss B M M Head lived at number 1 per the phone books, as did a Mrs G M Head-Evans (I believe these are Beatrice Monica Mary Head born c.1881, and Gertrude M Head-Evans born c.1879)

Dorothy Kathleen M Guise-Williams also died in Northampton in 1977. Born circa 1908

You will find Dorothy Kathleen Head aged 2, born Colombo, Ceylon,  in the 1911 census in Liverpool.

That's interesting ShaunJ, thank you! I'd used the 1939 register - 'Head' wasn't a name (appearing to) feature then... rhetorical question - I wonder if 'Head' is a family link or business/colleague of Oscar's... it's a link worth looking into.

I will be offline for a couple of hours now, but will pick up on this lead later and any other posts that may appear...

Thanks for your help, really appreciate any info that could unravel - what is currently - a mystery.

Yes, I think we can identify "Dorothy" as Dorothy Kathleen Head;  the marriage must have taken place between September 1932 and December 1934, probably in Tanganyika.
