You will need to buy a copy of their marriage cert as it cannot be looked up anywhere

In 1881 - Joseph still shows East Cottingwith as his birthplace and birthyear 1838.  No other children between 1871 - 1881

Thank you Goughy, BumbleB & CaroleW.  I'm defeated!

Looks like I'll have to order the certificate but given the GRO Page number, I don't understand why it's not at Howden.  Marriage Locator has all marriages between page numbers 144 and 175 inclusive as being at Howden Parish.  Page 143 is Thornton by Pocklington (in Pocklington RD) and Page 176 is unknown between Howden and Hessle (in Sculcoates RD).

Possibly my only hope is that it is in the register but not transcribed.

Unless you know which church they married in - the reference/page numbers are immaterial and only useful when ordering a copy.  Howden was the registration district and I posted the link in my earlier reply showing all the areas covered by it - all with various churches.

To find it via the records office would mean searching the marriage records of every church for the relevant quarter - very time consuming

If you are ordering from the GRO you need the quarter/district/volume number and page number which is on freebmd   www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

In 1851 - Joseph aged 14 is shown as the nephew of William & Ann Hemingway and appears to possibly have had a brother William

All b East Cottingwith

William Hemingway   32
Ann     39
Joseph  14 nephew
William  12 nephew

I haven't looked at the locator, so I may be talking out of the back of my hat!  :o :o

The parish church in Howden is NOT the only location for marriages, is it?  I think there is at least a Catholic church, plus I'm sure non-conformist chapels, and perhaps the Register Office.  It is interesting to see that the other marriage noted on the same page as Joseph (groom George Ward), also did NOT take place at the parish church.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Interesting snippet to ponder on.  There were Banns for an Ann Hemingway to a Thomas Hutchingson both of East Cottingwith read on 13th 20th and 27th November 1836 but I can't find a marriage! Joseph was christened on 15 January 1837 ?coincidence??

In 1851 there is a marriage on 29 December 1851 at Aughton Church - William Bateman,  aged 47 bachelor, (Father deceased)  Occupation Farmer to Ann Hemingway aged 40 spinster (Father William Hemingway Carpenter) Witnesses John Hemingway, William Hemingway, Thomas Coates
