Incidentally my W7 netbook is taking its time (30minutes +) to shut down. Why?

Updating? Got stuck in a loop?

No, neither of these. In the end I terminated it, switched on again and no problems this time.

Windows 10 works best with ALL the new features turned off, and using third party browser, email, etc  ;)

The biggest problem is that they released it before it was finished . . . that, and trying to make it touchscreen friendly for the kids at the expense of the more serious users ::)
Mike that sounds just what I would like ........ could you kindly explain how to turn the 'new features off and what 3rd party browser and email you use'?.
You've got to bear in mind that at 88+ I've been around a long while and technology is too fast for this old coot who was born when a man carrying a pole with naked flame on the tip to light the gas lighting in the street and 'that *was* technology'(only 80 odd years ago)' 8) 8)
Off now to find out more about 'Thunderbird' and what to feed it with.

Thunderbird is a Mail Program.

Firefox is a Browser..

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?product=firefox-3.6.8&os=osx%E2%8C%A9=en-US

From there you can download it.

Initially you should get a 'stub', this should go direct to your Download folder,  you then click on the stub in Download folder and the Program itself should just download and the open when finished.

It puts an Icon on Desktop which you can then click on to use the Web Browser at anytime.

Joe, what I do may not work for everyone, but the first thing, if you haven't already done it, is to go to 'Privacy' in the Settings, go through the entire list and turn everything off using the little buttons. This will prevent a lot of unneccessary 'apps' running in the background, sending your data to all and sundry, and you can always turn something back on if you find you need it.

Once you have installed Firefox and Thunderbird and got them working to your satisfaction you can make them the default browser and email; they usually ask you if you want to do this.

I find it best to change one thing at a time so it's easier to trace the cause if there is a problem.

I have assumed you are using a conventional PC. Things will be different for a tablet or a touchscreen PC/Laptop.

I'm trying to un-install 10 from my husbands Toshiba Satellite laptop it says it's doing something but we'll see.
Since the upgrade we've had a stuck curser, works for about 2 minutes and no internet access despite the machine saying it's connected.  Other pc's in the house are working fine on 7 and 8.1 so bye bye 10  >:(

If it doesn't work I guess it's a trip to pc world  :'(

From personal experience I wouldn't touch PC World with a 20 foot pole! A small independent computer company will give better service. This applies if out of warranty though.
