Minnie Wray bp 21 October 1882 Hull
« on: Wednesday 11 November 15 13:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have Minnie in the 1901 census (Class: RG13; Piece: 4504; Folio: 170; Page: 21) at home with her remarried mother and stepfather and was looking for her in 1911.

Not finding anything suitable I looked through the marriages 1901-1911 on Free BMD and found a Minnie Wray marrying in Sep 1907 to either an Ernest Marshall or a Fred Simpson.  I ruled out the 1901 and the 1911 marriages.  Not finding a suitable Minnie Marshall in 1911 I searched for a Minnie Simpson and came up with this entry (Class: RG14; Piece: 28790) but Minnie's birthplace is given as Holme on Yalding Moor, Yorkshire which is not Hull!

Two of the three girls could have been born to Minnie prior to marriage.

Thinking laterally I searched for Minnie Walker in 1911 and found this entry (Class: RG14; Piece: 24166) which could also be Minnie.

Is anyone able to help unravel this or find Minnie Wray anywhere else please?

Perhaps I should also post on the Lincolnshire board for info on births of the Wray girls Ellen Dolphinia and Minnie?

Thanks, Pheno

A Birth Certificate of any offspring of Minnie would prove whether she was formerly Wray! ;D

Yes you are right of course, but I should have said that like many of us, particularly as she is not a close family member, I am trying to do it without that expenditure.

Also I should have said that despite the coincidences Minnie Simpson might be a red herring and not my Minnie Wray at all.  Its just that the marriage was in Hull and the child of the two parents was born in Hull and the family are living in Hull in 1911.

The Minnie Wray you mention in 1907 did marry Fred Simpson and not Ernest Marshall although might not be the one you are looking for.

WRAY   Minnie   SIMPSON   Fred   Sculcoates Register Offices or Registrar Attended   Hull
SRO/70/167

In the 1891 census the Minnie Wray that you mention from the 1901 census with her mother and new step-father is aged 9 Living with mother Jane Wray in Hull at 45 Madely Street.  In 1901 there is an Elsie Walker living with Jane and Minnie.  Elsie Walker is living with a Minnie Archer and husband John William Archer in 1911. 516 Holderness Road.  They have a daughter Dera May Archer aged 7 (could be Vera looking at it and it has been incorrectly transcribed).

It appears the Minnie Wray from the 1882 baptism and 1901 census that you state married John William Archer Q4 1901 in Hull at St Stephens church.

If you search marriage on Yorkshire BDM  http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/index.php you'll be able to see who married the Minnie Wray in each of the years you're looking at.   I wouldn't rule out the 1901 marriage, it was after the Census date.   EDIT terrac you beat me to it!

Sorry Goughy - edited my post for less clutter.  :)

Vera May Archer was born Q2 1903 Hull so yes it was incorrectly transcribed as Dera.

Thanks very much.

Minnie Archer transcribed as Winnie Archer on Ancestry which is why I couldn't find it although I should know better.

.. changing subject some what. but I also have Wray.
William S Wray, died March 8 1894 at Strathroy Ontario Canada. Ontario death records (An***ry) give age as 53, born Hull England. He is also found in the 1891 Canadian census ... as being married .. age 50 .. Strathroy Ont. FreeBMD gives: William Smith Wray Mar 1840 Sculcoates .. that could well be him.
I believe he married in Ontario to a Mary Ellen Stephenson ... she was born around 1847 at Cottingham (just north of Hull)
William Stephenson - born 1814 at Doncaster West Yorkshire - married Mary Scott at Cottingham East Yorkshire (Hull) in 1838. Williams parents I believe were another Wm Stephenson and an Alice Carter - married Cantley Parish W Yorks (Doncaster) in 1811..... Other east riding names are Nicholls (Bridlington, Yorks and Wigan Lancs.) and the surname Withernwick.
