William Kingdon - Bristol
« on: Monday 09 November 15 23:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all - there seems to be a little confusion over one of my ancestors - William Kingdon - and I wonder whether anyone can help me to get back on track.

The known details are:
William was born in c.1824 in Bristol.
He married Ann Tippey in 1842 in St.John the Baptist Church, Broad Street.
He was a paper hanger/painter and lived in St.Pauls for the majority of his life.
He had 4 children - William, John, Ann and Rosina.
William died in the Eastville Workhouse in 1899, aged 75.

So here's the confusing part: In the 1861 and 1871 censuses, William in shown as being born in Taunton, while the 1891 census suggests he came from London.  I can find no other obvious Williams in these censuses, so I must be mixing them up somewhere down the line.

Another patchy area is William's parents who I think were John and Sarah, but this is TBC.

Can anyone please help?

Hi Carole - thanks for your reply.

William's father - John - was a Painter.

(So sorry, I now notice that I posted this in an area where I shouldn't.  Could it be placed in the correct area by someone in the know, please?)

Hi crisane - thanks for your reply.

Yes, I always assumed that entry was the family, but I'm still confused re why future censuses claim that William was born in Taunton and London?  Have I got the wrong "William" in the later censuses?

Keep this marriage in mind in case it turns out to be William's parents

He may have lived in Taunton when young and that is why on Census he had that as POB.
He was Baptised there;

William KINGDON Baptised 22 Aug 1824, St Mary, Taunton, Somerset
Parents JOHN/SARAH
Abode East St
Fathers Occp Painter
(Source FreeREG)
+
ANN Kingdon, same Church, 29 March 1829
Parents JOHN/SARAH
Abode Eastreach
Fathers Occp Printer

I would say that the entry may have been hard to transcribe for Ann and it is East Street and Fathers Occp Painter, not Printer,

For some reason the links that CaroleW gave wont open for me.

This is what I found, so not sure if its the same as CaroleW gave ;

Marriage;
28 June 1823, St John, Wellington, Somerset
John KINGDON, Widower, to Sarah WILLIAMS
(FreeREG)

Possible Burial;
SARAH Kingdon,
11 November 1846
St. Augustine'S, Bristol, Gloucester, England
Age 60 (birth c 1786)
(Source Familysearch.Org)

There is also a JOHN Kingdon Death Reg 1850, Bristol, Gloucestershire.
But no age given so hard to confirm if the correct one.

Trish :)

EDIT Familysearch entries now have opened for me.

Hi Trish - Thanks very much for your reply.

That's really informative and will now help me to fill in some of the blanks on the chart, so thank you for investigating this for me.

Regards

James
