Hi

Curiously there is a WW1 Medal Roll for an Alec Daily, R.A.S.C. number T4/198530. Would the R.A.S.C. used the same number twice? What does the T4 mean? I have heard of a some Irish enlisting in WW1 under an alias, is this a possibility?

Andy

Don't know at present, I'll have a look, but it's not exactly the same number, the prefix is different, it's T4 which also = horse transport, and the ASC had a huge range of number prefixes, people from every country enlisted with false names, and often with false ages, and for several reasons.

Have you actually seen his death certificate, and if so, who registered his death. A serving soldier who died at that time should be listed by the CWGC and he isn't, the Army had it's own death registration notification system and for soldiers who died whilst in service their deaths would be registered with the General Register Office for England and Wales in the Army death registrations, and his death wasn't registered as an Army death. That can sometimes happen for example if a man died whilst at home on leave and his death was registered locally by his next of kin. His illness was a long term one and my guess is that he had already been discharged befor he died, and that his wife may have registered his death and because the Army was his last occupation she listed him as being a soldier.

Could this be the grave of him and his wife and other family members un Carrickfergus on the outskirts of Belfast. ?

Because the Informant whether it is the widow or a son/daughter sometimes get the  details wrong, when asked by the registrar.

Just to add, William was born in 1889, so he would be aged 49 yrs in 1939, is that too old to enlist?
Do you know what his civilian job was in 1939?
If you got his marriage certificate, it may say what his occupation was.
He may have been a specialist in transport or shipping or vehicle maintenance.  Skills and experience valuable to the RASC.   Where was his address on his death certificate, please?
