Memorial inscription of Jane OATES, Hutton Rudby
« on: Sunday 01 November 15 22:57 GMT (UK) »
In the "Yorkshire Memorial Inscriptions Transcription" database on Findmypast, there is an entry for a Jane OATES, buried in All Saints', Hutton Rudby. No year of burial given in the index.

Does anyone know how I can find out whether the inscription still exists? I couldn't spot it when I visited the churchyard but I didn't have a lot of time to check carefully.

There are 3 possible matches for that name & location - one of which has no age

26.8.1839 aged 36
28.1.1831 aged 2
14.12.1811 - no age but surname Oats

No way of knowing if any tie up with the entry you found

I've asked on ENG-NORTH-YORKS-L to see if anyone there can help determine whether the inscription still exists.

how about phoning the church concerned and asking them? surely they would have records of the graves they have? I know I have had success in the past doing this

Hi

The transcription of the MI reads

Erected to the memory of Jane the wife of John OATES who departed this life ...? 1829 aged ?

Obviously it was already very worn when the transcription was done so may not still be there.

According to the transcription the grave is located 'North side of church, right side of path'

Belatedly - thank you all.

That's fantastic information. I now know that the MI does refer to 'my' Jane Oates.

I also know the approximate location of the grave so I can at least have a look for myself.

I will contact the church though to see if they can advise.

Many thanks again.
