Enquiry re Morris / Stoddart families in Tyanee, Portglenone
« on: Friday 30 October 15 14:13 GMT (UK) »
I was recommended to this site by a friend who reckons you guys are magicians! I wonder if you can help me, please?

I was adopted in 1954 from the Barnados home in Barkingside, Essex. Out of deference to my adoptive parents, I didn’t attempt to find any information regarding my birth mother and family until very recently, but finding information is proving very difficult. So far, I’ve discovered that:

I was born at Ballymena Cottage Hospital in Northern Ireland on 8th July 1947 and given the name Mervin Stoddart (also seen as Mervyn in records). I was later baptised into the Presbyterian Church of Ireland. My mother’s name was(*) (born 1931+/-1yr), and her family’s home was at a smallholding - given address Tyanee, Portglenone, County Antrim. (*) lived with her mother, Mary (born 1903+/-1yr), stepfather William Morris (born 1875+/-1yr), and sister (*) (born 4th July 1933). Mary’s first husband had died around six years before I was born, and sadly I don’t know her maiden name (or her 1st husbands given name). Since I cannot trace any details re the farm it is impossible to learn from which of the three lines it was passed down. My putative father worked on the farm as a labourer - (*) (c1927). He was dismissed (and ejected from his cottage) as soon as the pregnancy was discovered.

Both the Salvation Army and Barnados have attempted to trace my family, without success. Both William and Mary are obviously dead by now, and I know that (*)’s sister (Joan) was both resident in Belfast in 2002-6 and died in the same locale in 1st August 2009. My mother briefly returned to the farm in 1950 (having previously been banished by her stepfather) leaving to go to “the city”. It is unclear whether this was to Belfast/ Dublin or further afield in the UK, but we do know that she acquired a passport in 1951. Since she could not be found by adoption services, it is presumed that she too is dead.

Any information would be very gratefully received as all my research with Ancestry, Genes Reunited & Findmypast has proved fruitless.

Kind regards, Mervyn.

Welcome to Rootschat but we aren't allowed to post details of living (or possibly living) people so you will likely find that a moderator will be editing your post since it concerns recent events. Now that you've 2 posts you should be able to send and receive PMs (Personal Messages) to discuss things that can't be posted online here.
Many 'recent' records are not online so lack of results doesn't at all mean that your mother is deceased yet.
I've copied your post and did a wee bit of searching but am so far struggling to find information which matches anything you've posted but will continue to check more local resources.

I found a William Morris in the townland of Tyanee (1911-1929 Valuation Revision Book- www.proni.gov.uk) under 3 different parcels-
14. changed from Thomas Patrick Henry (of the Hill) to Wm. Morris c1928 (house, offices, land)
15. same details but just land
28. changed from Joe Burnside to William Morris c1921, In fee (bought out) c1928

This is the listing from the Belfast Gazette (1927) listing intention to purchase property under the Land Purchase Act-
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/Belfast/issue/291/page/61/data.pdf

Morris may not be that common a name there and am wondering if this headstone inscription ties in with your William Morris?

If your William Morris was born c1875 (not sure how you've arrived at that date) then this could be him in 1911- with a 1st wife and family?

Same family in 1901-

For some reason this family tree lists him as Tom Morris  ???

Many thanks for all your replies - already some very helpful information!

Sincere apologies for inadvertently breaching your 'living relative' rules. Thank you 'moderator' for your input.

As there is a very slight possibility that either my father and/or mother is still alive, can I please suggest that if you have any information relating to the Stoddart / Morris households at Tyanee, Portglenone in the first half of the 20th century (particularly the period 1940-50) please send me a private message.

Kind regards to all.
