Isaac Lewis - Ruddry - I'm stumped and could use a hand
« on: Sunday 18 October 15 00:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for the ancestors of Amelia Lewis baptized Oct 6 1822 in Ruddry.  The daughter of Isaac and Ann Lewis, OTP.  His occupation listed as collier.

I can't find Amelia or her family in 1841.  She was in service in Rhydybyddin in 1851 and married in Caerphilly by 1853.

I can't find any record of Isaac and Ann in Ruddry area.  There are a few Isaacs in Merthyr Tydfil but the one I thought was interesting, marrying an Ann Davies in 1820, was an iron miner.  I don't know, did they work in both industries?

Any help in tracking down other viable Isaacs or helping me prove or disprove this one, would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Firstly I think the the place name is Rhydyboithan and not Rhydybyddin in the 1851 census.

Have had look on the 1841 census and there is a possible Ann Lewis, born 1821, who was living in Rhydyboithan in the 1841 census.  She looks to be single as there is no male with her and she is living with another female called Francis Thomas age 15 years.  What is also interesting is that on the same 1841 census page there is a William & Amy Mathews.  On the 1851 census Amelia is a servant to a William & Amy Mathews.  The place name also looks the same for both 1841 & 1851 census as does the ages for William & Amy, but William Mathews is shown as a labourer in 1841 & Farmer in 1851.

The source is:
Eglwys Ilan, Glamorgan HO107/1414/6/ 35; p 12

Hope this helps

Thank you both for your help.  The mystery isn't solved but you've certainly given me something to try working through.  It is likely that the first born girl would have her mother's name so siblings named Ann and Amelia make sense.  One has to wonder why they would both be in Rhydyboithan if the parents had back to Merthyr.  I guess they had found posts and stayed with the work.

Thanks again!
