In 1841 census Robert was lodging age 17 at Heaton, Newcastle and he was a pitman. In 1851 census he was lodging with Thomas parker at Sea View Row, Cowpen.

Are you positive this is the right Robert in 1851? He is an 'Iron Labourer', born Newcastle. (HO 107 / 2412 / 443 / 22)

Yet you say that in 1841 and 1852 (marriage certificate) your Robert was a pitman.

All the following censuses show him to be a coal miner and he consistently gives his birthplace as Wallsend.

You need to take ages with a little bit of a pinch of salt.

In the 1881 census Robert's age is given as 65, i.e. born c. 1816.

Kay99 gave you another good option in reply #1: in this case the age does not fit that given on the marriage certificate. But the occupation does, and the birthplace is also correct going by all the later censuses.

In addition she pointed out in reply #5 that Robert had a brother called Jeremiah, born in 1818, and you know that your Robert had a son also called Jeremiah

Kay99's reply, we are not sure what to do now.  Also not sure about Robert's brother Jeriamiah, who he married etc, as we have not gone down that route, we have enough problems trying to get Robert's parents sorted out. Many thanks lots to think about.

Don't want to add to your problems but I don't think the Robert Atkinson age 17 living in Heaton, Newcastle in 1841 is your Robert.   Although he  was a Collier he was listed as not born in Northumberland
