Mary Swinney, b.1800.
« on: Wednesday 07 October 15 20:00 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information about my 4 greats grandmother, Mary Swinney, who was born in Ireland around 1800. I know that in the 1830s she was living in Knottingley in Yorkshire with her husband, John Howram, who was a sailor. Their children were John Hanson (1834-1897), George (b.1838) and Sarah (b.1845).
I'd really like to know where she came from and who her parents were - it's even possible she'd been married before, or that she and John had lived in Ireland together.

Irish records are really hit and miss in the early 1800s and earlier for many historic reasons
Only knowing that Mary is from Ireland is going to be a difficult search

have you located her on UK census returns?
is there any chance she stated a county on one of those?
do you know where she married? - the church record may have recorded her original home
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
Byrne [Carthy], Keeffe/ Germaine, Butler/ McDermott, Giblin/ Lally, Dolan
Toole, Doran; Dowling, Grogan/ Reilly, Burke; Warren, Kidd [Lawless]/ Smith, Scally; Mangan, Rodgers/ Fahy, Calday; Staunton, Miller
Further generations:
Brophy Coleman Eathorn(e) Fahy Fitzpatrick Geraghty Haverty Keane Keogh Nowlan Rowe Walder

Yeah, I've been really struggling to find any Irish records at all from that date; I asked on the offchance someone might know of a Mary Swinney who vanished off to England.
I know she married John Howram in Pontefract on 16th March 1834 - so she might have already been pregnant with their first son, who was baptized on 9th November of that year. She appears as John's wife on the 1841 census; Neither of these records give any more clues as to where she was born.

Yes, there were a LOT of Howrams around Knottingley and Pontefract in the C19th - I have all the ones I'm interested in pretty much sorted out, it's just this Mary Swinney who's giving me trouble! thanks for looking them up for me, though.
