Basically, Annie, Al is using a very simplified version of Coutts' Rules of Bookmaking.  The detailed account suggests that the transverse bet takes precedence over all others that are made PRIOR to the 'obvious' one, so that the favourite becomes the second favourite, and so on, until you reach the end of the field.  This is only nullified when the 'axis' bet is laid off.

Thought everyone knew that!
