Hi All,
I am so totally confused over the layout for the Higher Cemetery in Exeter. I have many family members buried there and I am convinced that some of them would definitely have a headstone but I am so lost over the meaning of the sections. If someone who has had experience with this Cemetery then please can you lend some advice!
As I understand it the system for recording locations has changed a number of times over its 150 year history. The map which is on a sign at the cemetery and also online is very complicated (in my opinion). I can see that the newer sections, HK, ZE, RC etc are pretty straight forward but most of mine are in the older part. I have visited the cemetery twice but only found one out of around 25!
The one I found was Mary Ann Hodge who in the record says the locality is:
Section: D
Division: -
Number: 249C
This grave was in the square on the map marked C8 - C10
It makes no sense!!
Another one, my great-grandfather Charles Percy Bromley reads:
Section: D
over both Division and Number says: G82
As far as I can tell there is not a single "G" or even one implied anywhere on the map.
Anyone want to try to help figure it out.......?
