Ralph Crann from Leeds 1800s.
« on: Saturday 03 October 15 22:51 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find details for Ralph Crann, probably born in Leeds sometime in the mid - late 1800s. Apparently he is connected to my Gr gr grandfather Edwin Crann (1821-1871) and his daughter Elizabeth (born 1850) who married William Croisdale in 1870 in Leeds.

It seems Ralph was a musician in the Army and played for Queen Victoria and at her funeral. The information came from a diary written by Elizabeth and William's son, also named William Croisdale, so I assume there must be some truth in it!

I found this information in an old post that I have come across on another site, dated 2001, posted by a descendant of William Croisdale who had emigrated to Canada. Unfortunately I have been unable to make any contact after all this time!

I have been unable to find any Ralph Crann at all and wonder if this was possibly a nickname? The person who posted seemed to think Ralph was Edwin's son but this does seem unlikely to me.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Erica.

Hi there,

Had a look for you. Boy was it hard to find a Ralph.
Just wonder if he was illegitimate and maybe had the nickname of Ralph.

I could only find one Ralph born from a Father called Ralph but they were in Durham.

His name might be Richard as Edwin certainly had a son called Richard in 1846.
I have noticed that the surname Crann became Cran, Crane, Crain, Craun, so could be a hard
find.  So hope you have better luck than I did.  Take care

Hi, thanks for looking for me - I had given up!

Have you found evidence that Edwin had a son called Richard? Please let me know what you did find as I can't find anything! However, he did have a son called Joseph in 1846.

There is a Richard Crann born in 1846 to Richard Crann (Edwin's cousin) and Maria Spencer. I wonder if this might be "Ralph".

The Cranns are a very complicated family!

Best wishes.
