I'm looking for anything about Sydney he was born in Lambeth, London in 1897. father was Fredrick Archbold--mother was Jessie Holland both were actors. His father died in 1908 and his mother had left before that, so he was cared for by an actors orphanage. I think he went to Freemantle WA in 1926. can anyone help ? He was my grandmother older brother.
Regards
Graham

The only marriage I can find for a Frederick ARCHBOLD to a Jessie is the one below.

Frederick committed bigamy in 1895 as he married his first wife in 1883.  She petitioned and was successful in divorcing him in 1897 on the grounds of bigamy and adultery.

The divorce file gives his occupation as Actor and Jessie as Actress on their 1895 marriage certificate in the file.

Marriages Mar 1895  - Frederick stated he was a widow aged 35 years and Jessie was 20 years of age and an actress.  Jessie's father was Daniel BURGESS.
ARCHBOLD    Frederick James         Cockermouth    10b/788
BURGESS Jessie Edith         Cockermouth    10b/788

Births Dec 1895
ARCHBOLD Sidney Herbert        Lambeth    1d/382

In the 1901 Census Frederick J ARCHBOLD, Actor is a boarder and Sydney H aged 5 is with him.

I can't see Frederick's death in 1908.  Do you have the registration details?  Of course his surname could be mistranscribed.

Wow you are really good at this. I will have to drag all my info together. can't remember where Jessie Holland came from. Stage name maybe..  will get back to you. I know Fredricks first marriage produced a daughter
in Beamish near Durham. I didn't know about the bigamy.
Many thanks
Graham

Hi,

The official Gazette dates for Sydney's WW1 DCM and MM are as follows.

The DCM
The London Gazette, published date 30th August 1918, Supplement 30879, page 10264.
10264, Supplement to the London Gazette, 3rd September 1918.
70119, CPL S.H. Archbold, Tank Corps, (W Ealing)

The MM
The London Gazette, published 28th January 1919, Supplement 31150, page 1449.
Supplement to the London Gazette, 29th January 1919, 1449.
70119, Lance CPL Sidney Herbert Archbold, DCM, 5th Tank Battalion, Tank Corps, (West Ealing. W)

Because the DCM is a conspicuous award one down from the VC for non officers there was a citation added to the Gazette Notice, I can copy this out if you wish or you could go to the LG site and download both notices, search under he service number, 70119 it makes it easier because he is in as SIDNEY Herbert Archbold for the MM and S. H. Archbold for the DCM.

Hi, Sydney Herbert Archbold is my grandfather, he lived with people named Cato before WW1, not sure of the dates but he referred to her as " mother" in letters he wrote from the front.
He married Emily Brown in 1920 and moved to Perth, Australia in 1926 and died in 1962, he had several children.
I too have the marriage cert, etc but have not heard the name Holland before as Burgess is on the M Cert, I have never been able to find Daniel Burgess as a father of a Jessie Edith.
I also have not been able to find out what happened to either Jessie of Frederick so would be great fun for any info.
