John Austen Macey
« on: Saturday 03 October 15 08:17 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find the parents of John Austen Macey born somewhere between 1794 and 1800 in Charing Kent. He married Mary Scott in 1823. I can trace my tree to this point but am seriously stuck.
There were alot of Maceys' born in the area and I am trying to pinpoint whom may have been the father.
It appears that a lot of the family incorporated the grand mothers or mothers  surname into names at some point, though I thought this to be a Scottish theme. For example his brother Frederick had a son George who was known as George Hoare Macey. Hoare being Frederick's wifes surname. There are quite a few examples throughout the tree. Looking at it this was maybe the Austen/Austin was applied the same.
Any lead would help immensely.
Many Thanks
Sue

When he married Mary Scott in 1823 his name is transcribed on familysearch just as Macey.  Have you seen the original record, does that give a middle name. Who were the witnesses.

Very often middle names which are 'surnames' are children born illegitimately and their fathers name has been added as an additional christian name

Hi,
Yes have seen the original on findmypast and on //www.woodchurchancestry.org.uk/midkentmarriages. Do you think then I am right in assuming the Austen part may be just his mothers name. I will have a search in the area.
Thank you.
Sue

There is a baptism for a John Austen at Charing as follows:-

1798 July 22 John s/o Frances Austen, born 12 April (father not stated)

There are two further baptisms to Frances Austen, at Charing
Frances Elizabeth in 1794, and
Jane in 1802

I could not find any Macey baptisms in that Parish.

The mother Frances might have married a James Jackson.  There is a marriage record dated 18 July 1803 at Charing with those names as Bride and Groom.

This may be of some use.

Tony

Hi,
I have found a family from New Romney called Masey and some of the children have Austin in their name. The mothers name was also Austin but the children were born after the marriage. There is a John born 1799 but its quite a distance from the Charing area. Do you think this could be connected. I do know that the Macey name was altered throughout certain families.

Thanks
Sue

It is possible that John Austin Macey was brought up in Charing but born elsewhere but always believed that was where he was born.

One way of eliminating the New Romney family is to look in the PR's to see if the other children married or died there, also whether the parents are buried there.

Hi,
The Masey's in New Romney have been in the area for generations so that's eliminated that one.
There are a couple of John Austen's born in Charing. One to Sarah Turner and another to Ann Peacock.
Also have found a John Austen in Wye born but dates don't add up. Looking through Kent birth lists no John Austen Macey was born in Charing. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thanks

Thanks
