Regarding James Prince of Selby, England, Master of the Aid, Spirit Merchant and Ship owner.
Newspaper, Deaths, December 1808
Last week, Mr. James Prince, of Selby, chief owner of the Brig Aid, a regular trader from York to London.

Some research notes (research Tree attached) to date about James Prince and his Wife Arabella Prince (nee Arabella Wardle). James Prince, Gentleman and Widower, of the Parish of Selby, Yorkshire, married Arabella Sissons, Widow in 1801 by Licence.

Arabella's first marriage: John Sissons of this Parish [Kirk Fenton] and Arabella Wardle of the Parish of Cawood, in 1791, at Kirk Fenton, Yorkshire, England, by Licence.

Arabella born about 1744 - 1745 from the ages given on the transcribed Licence applications, not seen.

At an initial glance only, it seems Arabella might have been baptised as Isabella? But no firm evidence whatsoever.

I cannot find any Wardle, nor Wardale / Wardell link to Malton, Yorkshire and the Jane Wardale mentioned in the Will of James HOOD of Scarborough Proved Dec 1782, Sister Jane WARDALE, alias WARDLE, signed Wardell or Wardele at her marriage.
 ----------
Back to James Prince dying Selby 1808.

TNA, Kew, IR 26/431/374 Abstract of Will of James Prince, Spirit merchant of Selby, Yorkshire. Proved in the Court of York, 1809.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7219238

The daughter of the above James Prince was Mary Ann Prince who was present at the 1794 Marriage of Maudland Hood of Selby (Maudland Hood born Scarborough, Yorkshire).

The following Will must be linked to the above nee Mary Ann Prince / Mary Ann Foster / Mary Ann Taylor of Selby, her Father James Prince married Grace Marshall in 1767 at Scarborough.

TNA, Kew, England
PROB 11/1721/249 Will of Ann Marshall, Spinster of Scarborough , Yorkshire, 1827
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6393936

In the 1827 Will (written 25th August 1821), Ann Marshall mentions Niece, Mary Ann Taylor and her two children Thomas Taylor and James Taylor. Jane Heward* the widow of Joseph Howard* and Daughter of James and Elizabeth Marshall. My Nephew William Prince. Jane Prince, Sole Executrix. Jane Prince, Spinster, Proves the Will.
* These PCC Wills are copies, one copied Heward and the other Howard.

Looking at Yorkshire on f m p the following look to be the above family:-
1761 12th April at Scarborough by Licence (ages from Licence transcription - Not seen)
James Marshall, 28
Elizabeth Stephenson, 23
Present: John Cornforth (possibly present as a church man)
Elizabeth Witty

1808, at Scarborough, by Licences (ages in Marriage Register)
Joseph Heward, 50, Widower, Ship Builder
Present: Judith Stephenson
Jonathan Huntriss

Joseph Heward
A burial[?] at Scalby but relationships for men don't seem to be given (whereas, Wife or Parent to dec'd is), nor their trade and also James Heward, age, suggests he was 8 yrs older at Marriage (if the burial is the correct one?).
Scalby Burials
Joseph Heward, 64, Abode Scarborough, 28th August 1814
(The Scalby burial age is far too much at odds for me, to be accepted as correct without a secondary corroborating piece of evidence e.g. a Will or M.I., Property Deed, Inquest, or newspaper Notice etc., to link him to the marriage).

The Muster Rolls at Hull for the Centurion, vessel say John Hood, Abode Selby, was Master.

Leeds Intelligencer, 1st September 1789
HULL, August 29.
Jason, Stephenson ; Lyde, Birch ; Air Balloon, Metcalf ; Jane and Mary, Merchant ; Amity, Graham ; Hervy, Strachen ; Centurion, Hood ; Hope, Hunter ; Ellison, Hutchinson ; and Latona, Barry, all from Petersburgh, with deals, iron, &c.

Sheffield Public Advertiser, also Stamford Mercury, 5th February 1790
HULL.
Arrived ... Centurion, Hood, from Pernau, with fir, timber, &c.

See attachment
Two later references in ship lists spell the place Pernau.

Today, possibly Pärnu in Estonia.

They were usually sailing across the North Sea (German Ocean) to St Petersburgh from 1788 to 1790 according to the Muster Rolls.

Sheffield Register, 13th August 1790

Ship News.
HULL.
Centurion, Hood ; Elizabeth and Ann, Cockrell, from Memel.

Sheffield Register, 12th November 1790
Hull.
Arrived ... Centurion, Hood, from Memel.

A few days ago lost on the Swin, on her passage from Petersburgh, the ship Perseverance, belonging to Hull, loaded with iron, &c. for London. The men got into the tops, but unfortunately the captain, mate, and three of the men were soon washed into the sea. Four men, the remaining part of the crew, were taken up, by a fishing boat and are arrived at Hull.

It has even been announced that the YORKSHIRE TONTINE, is given up.

It sounds as though it was going to be some type of scheme. Quite a few references to the Yorkshire Tontine online. A list of names appears beneath the paragraph:-

Nath. Cholmley
Tho. Davison Bland
Sam. Francis Barlow
Alexander Hunter
Rich. Wood, junior
Henry Grimston
John Carr
Henry Myers

Hi Mark,

Seeing everytime I just check 'familyseach website' to see if any new George Hood baptisms 1780 to 1790 have popped up- the George Hood son of John baptism 1786 Gateshead tops the list.

Have you ever checked coaster shipping on the river Tyne docked 1786 in newspapers or books

Basically if Jane Hood wife of John Hood burial 1803 Selby came from that area? with surnames in Wills or marriage witnesses -Like 'Leadlay' surname

Just a though.

Dave
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello Dave and All

Baptisms
Black & White scan - Gateshead, B.T.

Colour - Gateshead Register, unfortunately no more detail for any of the events.

1786, 30th September Hull, list
I think we may have looked at the nearest sailing before in the paper, to the Gateshead baptism, as I already have the 1786 Hull list for 30th September, published 3rd October.
(Second line up from the bottom).

John Hood went to London, in a vessel called "Jane", which might belong to Staniland

One vessel called "Jane" in the Payments Book, appears to belong to Jonathan Staniland & Thomas Staniland.

I know we looked in the Master and Vessel indexes for the Muster Rolls for the "Jane" and a John Hood, but there was no listing, but each Muster Roll usually covers a period of months, or even years.

We could only find Thomas Staniland (Master) of the "Jane" in 1789.

From April 1788 onward, John Hood of Selby, was Master of the "Centurion" from Petersburgh, Owner - Hewson and his previous vessel to the "Centurion" was noted in April 1788 as the "Aid" of Captain Prince.

The Muster Roll of the "Aid" Master, James Prince has been checked and no John Hood, so Hood's time as a crew member on the "Aid" was too short for him to appear in the Muster Roll of the "Aid" which we have obtained, by a paid search and digital image.

We never saw any wife, female, nor children named with a crew in any of these Muster Rolls (in the three whole volumes seen) which must have been about a 1,000 pages in total, nor the others where we had a specific Folio number from the handwritten Master and Vessel Name, indexes.

Payments Book
We didn't photograph all the Payment Book pages and there might be more than one vessel called "Jane" using Hull, in the mid 1780s. I was primarily interested in the vessel called "Industry" in this book.

However, the vessel names I & J, might also go onto the adjacent pages, either side of the page photographed, so I will order images of all vessels beginning J, in the Payments Book.

England & Wales Census
In the 19th Century where the crew were on a vessel on Census night in the England & Wales Census, I noticed in the 1871 and 1881 Census accompanying family were named.

The 2 John Hood's of Scarborough.

1- John Hood born 1722 going by age on bond allegation 1759 age 37 intent to marry and did to Elizabeth Hood maiden name Scarborough.

1 - John Hood born 1737 by his death age 1819 Selby aged 82.

Which one was a master captain or both were captains

Bearing in mind Sarah Hammond marriage 1778 was London - could the Hull to London coaster ship 1786 be the other John Hood mariner who married Sarah Hammond.

No doubt ships would carry cargo from London straight to the river Tyne or from any port even if the ship was registered in Hull, and therefore Tyneside shipping mid 1780's movement could have had John aboard. If John Hood had a boarding room in Selby 1786 he could have has a female friend called Jane (Later Mrs Hood died 1803 Selby) living in Gateshead parish who he father a child 1786 and John Hood could have been in dock awhile on the river Tyne.

From your newspaper snippet - Coasters ~  Young Maria, and Greathead, sailed for Newcastle.

(Those blooming baptisms Geo son of John Hood 1786 Gateshead - with no other John Hood baptisms of this John Hood being resident having more children in Gateshead parish register +/- 10 years , then no infant or adult burial or marriage of a likely George Hood in later years around Tyneside. - perfect jigsaw pieces that fit but the picture seems wrong.  :( )
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Hello All

Thanks Dave

Arrivals at Shields [Nr Newcastle], happen to be in the weekly Newcastle Courant (newspaper Saturday 7th October 1786)  :)

'Young Maria', Greathead ;
'Thomas & Hannah', Thompson ;
'Horn', Stainiland ;
'Tyne', Guy, from Hull.

On the Hull, Coasters Sailed, regarding Horn it says:- Thorne, Staniland, for Whitby and Newcastle ;

Looks like Hood, did sail South to London.

I will remove the Marriage Allegations Later, if you wish to save the information Dave?

Both John Hood, were listed as "Mariner" only, on their respective 1759 and 1763 Scarborough, Marriage Bonds.
