I take it you looked at the Bishop's Transcripts while you were at Lichfield Record Office, just in case.

Hi Derby Girl,

That's a good point, to be honest i can't remember. I was fairly hopeful that someone would have been able to help had there been a straightforward Burton baptism record. I was expecting an illegitimate birth or such. The fact that no one has been able to assist leads me to think i need to look elsewhere. Do you have any idea if non-conformity was vogue in Burton ?

Thanks,

Northamptonshire Boy

Yes, lots of chapels of all sorts, at least one very early - 17th Century started by a minister put out at the Restoration.

A little bit earlier than your 1816 estimate but:

Tatenhill (just outside Burton) - John son of James and Hannah Wilkins - 15 December 1812.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Hello LFS,
Thanks for your input.
I wish that baptism record was a little bit later but 1812 is the wrong side of the 1815/16 target which the censuses suggest to be likely. Having said that his ages given on the seven records i have of it are irregular. His wife, born abt 1814, was usually given as older than John, up to thirteen years on one census, so if anything he was probably born after her.
Haven't totally ruled it out though,
Cheers,
Andy
