Burton on Trent, Baptism - John Wilkins (born about 1817)
« on: Tuesday 29 September 15 04:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find a Burton on Trent baptism for John Wilkins (abt 1816-94).
As background;
Married, 9 April 1837, Bristol St.James, Gloucs. To Sylvia Golding/Goulding (1814-91)
1841 Census, Walsall, Staffs, Age 25, Married, Chainmaker
1851 Census, Walsall, Staffs, Age 34, Married, Harness Maker
1861 Census, Walsall, Staffs, Age 44, Married, Chain Manufact.
1871 Census, Walsall, Staffs, Age 40 (?), Married, Chainmaker
1881 Census, Walsall, Staffs, Age 64, Married, Coffee-Stall Keeper
1891 Census, Walsall, Staffs, Age 75, Widower, No Occupation
Death 4 Sept 1894, Walsall RD, Staffs, Age 74 (?) 'John Wilkins, Coffee-Stall Keeper'

I could not find a baptism record at Lichfield Record Office but some of the baptisms were hard to read.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks,

Andy

Have you been able to find the marriage record?  This should show father's name?  Might narrow the search a bit.

Looking at online baptism records there seem to be very few Wilkins related to Burton (and Hugh Wallis' page suggests the records are on IGI), but some crop up at Tatenhill, nearby, and Handsworth / Walsall.

Upton, Bishops Wood, Staffordshire.  Jones, Nant-yr-Ych, Aberhafesp, Montgomeryshire.  Evans, Kinnerley, Flintshire.  Dennis, Breedon-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire.  Brown, Red Lake, Wellington, Shropshire.

The Marriage is just before Civil Reg dionysus unfortunately ::)

I did notice a CHARLES Wilkins born c 1815 - Burton on Trent, Staffordshire in 1861 Census.
Wife Sarah, Charles Occp Tool Maker
1851 he is born c 1815 Tettenhall, Staffordshire
Ann PITT, Neice age 15 is with them also.

So as dionysus suggested  you may ave to look elsewhere for Johns Baptism.

Dionysus & Trish,
As Trish said JW's marriage took place shortly before the crucial mid 1837 cut-off, did'nt he realise that his descendants may have problems identifying him.
Sorry, what is IGI ?
John Wilkins is given as Burton on Trent born on all his censuses so it seemed a good place to start, however Burton is slap bang on the Derbyshire border with a couple of old Derbyshire parishes (Winshill & Stapenhill) now included in the modern town.
At least if Staffordshire could be eliminated then it would have to be Derbyshire. I would have thought he would have mentioned, at least once, if he had been Derbyshire born though, especially as he always lived in Staffs.
I'll check the Charles Wilkins lead.

Trish - You are the Don !
Everything you posted to me, last week, about the William Morris, 1949, Ross on Wye baptism was correct - right on the money. I'd been staring at that brick wall for ages but not any more. I've got William Morris's parents & grandparents now. Thanks, great work.

Grateful in Northants.

IGI = International Genealogy Index run by the Latter Day Saints (LDS).  It is a searchable database of transcriptions of mainly births and marriages at familysearch dot org.   Conventional wisdom is that it has to be treated with caution as there are some errors, but I have found it mostly accurate and it can point towards where the original parish records can be found.  The Hugh Wallis website is an index of parish registers with links to familysearch and is another way in via country, county and parish, name optional - type "Hugh Wallis's Genealogical Web Sites" in your search engine.

Why not try asking for a parish reg. look-up for marriage on Gloucs. board..won't give fathers names

but witnesses could be of help ..especially if Wilkins.
