Edward WHITE m. Maria Northy LAITY Sep qtr 1910 in Helston
« on: Tuesday 12 July 05 23:34 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the line and family of Edward White who was my Godmother's Grandfather and married in Helston in Sep qtr of 1910 (PRO/IGI). All she knows is that he was 54 when he died of cancer and that the White's have a history of cancer with 20th century life expentancy of around 40-50 - she is 66 and exceptional.

Two of their children were Lydia and William who died 'young'.

I have found a number of Laitys and have communicated this to Truro, but need information on the Whites.

Many thanks

Thought this looked interesting as a possible father? for your Edward??

1891 RG12/1840 Folio 25 Page 8
Helston, Cornwall

Margaret White Widow 73 Living on her own means Cornwall St Keverne?
Margaret Stevens Daughter Widow 42 Inn Keeper Helston
Edward White Son 35 Hotel Post Boy Helston
Minnie E Stevens Granddaughter 20 Grocers Assistant Cornwall Mannaccan?
Mabel G Stevens Granddaughter 12 Scholar Cornwall Mannaccan?
Nellie Stevens Granddaughter 10 Scholar Corwall Mannaccan?

But then I found this one (the son) - how old was Edward when he married in 1910 so you can confirm/discount this one? -

RG12/1839 Folio 180 Page 9
Green Lane, Sithney, Cornwall

Edward White 30 Ag Lab St Keverne
Alice 31 Constantine
Joseph H 5 Helston
Catherine J 3 Helston
William J 1 Sithney
Edward 2mths Sithney

(On the 1901 census Edward Senior, now aged 42!, Labourer on Farm, appears to have remarried - Susan aged 29 born St Keverne and is living with sons John (12) Edward (10) and James L (age 8 all born St Keverne)

Edward White married Susan Eustis? September Quarter 1896 Helston Vol 5c Page 279

Also on the 1891 census, possible grandfather?

RG12/1839 Folio 6 Page 5
Gwealgears?, Wendron, Cornwall

Edward White 74 Ag Lab St Keverne
Eleanor 62 Yorks Whitby

(On 1881 census hes living with daughter and son in law + 3 grandchildren RG11/2323 Folio 17 Page 27, so you can look it up)

Looking at the 1881 census, the first family I mentioned comprises of William and Margaret White, their 2 sons and 1 daughter Mary, William C and Edward, as well as 2 granddaughters Minnie and Elizabeth E Stevens RG11/2323 Folio 15 Page 24

This gives you a few Edward Whites and familys to work at. Let me know if you want me to take them further back to 1871/61. (If you can get your Edwards parents details of his birth/marriage certs, you should be able to decide which one of these/if any is yours)

Catherine

Dear Catherine

I think that the Sithney born Edward is an extremely strong possibility, and I am going to order a marriage certificate from Southport to check for date at marriage.

My Aunt in her early childhood remembers him as a 'Carter', although he did not have a business so does not appear in the trades directories available at www.historicaldirectories.org

What I also need now from someone in Cornwall is to get hold of electoral roll information. Up here in Leeds I just go to Local Studies Library and the info is there year-by-year back to the Burgess rolls.

From this information we are looking at a date of death/burial of 1944/45. With his history of cancer he would not have been in the Armed Forces.

Once I have ascertained that this Edward is the one then the floodgates just open. Always the same with the 'hundred-year' barrier with different obstacles every time: Someone is going to have to write a book about this phenomenon! Krissjoint, are you reading this!

Thanks a lot for this pointer - I have access to all sorts of books from my Leeds University Library if you need info/lookups, and have 1841 1851 1861 original censuses & Phillimore's Marriages & Cornish Domesday (among others).

Also, if you see information from any books that you can't get hold of locally, but are on www.leeds.ac.uk/library/ then let me know at my email address and I will see what I can do.

Thanks again

Chris Penrose

Hi
I just found this post strangely I have just finished doing a tree for a family who are direct descendants of Margaret White & Stevens family you have listed in  1881 &
1891 RG12/1840 Folio 25 Page 8
Helston, Cornwall

Margaret White Widow 73 Living on her own means Cornwall St Keverne?
Margaret Stevens Daughter Widow 42 Inn Keeper Helston
Edward White Son 35 Hotel Post Boy Helston
Minnie E Stevens Granddaughter 20 Grocers Assistant Cornwall Mannaccan?
Mabel G Stevens Granddaughter 12 Scholar Cornwall Mannaccan?
Nellie Stevens Granddaughter 10 Scholar Corwall Mannaccan?

 ********************
I have lots of information regarding this family and known descendants, if this is your family I would love to exchange information
I am too curious about Edward White listed 1891 he is the son of Margaret White and his father was a William known Blacksmith of Helston

In 1901 Census his sister Margaret Stevens is still running the 7 Stars Inn in Helston with her own children
But Edward is not there so curious myself what happened to him please let me know if you think its your family I would love to add another piece to this tree

I have just checked some Cornish records for you and don;t know if you had this information regarding the above mentioned Edward White & Maria Northey Laity
 Edward White Marriage details :

Parish or Registration District:    Helston
Date:                                          20 july 1910

GROOM:                                     Edward White
Groom's age:                             19
Groom's condition:                     Bachelor
Groom's rank/profession:          Quarryman
Groom's residence:                    St Keverne
Father:                                       Edward White
Father's rank/profession:          Quarryman

BRIDE:                                       Maria  Northey Laity
Bride's age:                               Full
Bride's condition:                       Spinster
Bride's rank/profession:
Bride's residence:                      Helston
Father:
Father's rank/profession:

Banns(B) or Licence(L):             Licence
Groom Signed(S) or Marked(M):
Bride Signed(S) or Marked(M):
Witness 1:                                Jane Jennings Pascoe
Witness 2:                                E G Rowe
ref: 12PR-p.76-152

I would say this isn;t the same Edward White listed with White & Stevens family in 1881 & 1891, but its possible there is still a family link as the White family do originally come from St Keverne and it was a huge family, so its possible a cousin
I hope this helps I should have also added I do live in Cornwall and can access records if you need help

Also just noticed something you have got the name Bennetts in your list now that is interesting as I too know they were related to White family :
Margaret White who is listed in Helston in 1891 as a widow had a brother Hugh Carlyon  their parents were William Carlyon & Frances Olivey, now he married into the Bennetts
here is a couple of Newspaper articles ;

West Britain Newspaper Friday 6th September 1839 Marriage

At Wendron, on Wednesday last, by the Rev. W. Stracey, Mr. H. Carlyon, printer and  bookseller, to Elizabeth, second daughter of Mr. Johnson Bennetts, of the Angel Hotel, both of Helston.

West Britain Newspaper Friday 4th October 1850
At Helston, on Sunday last, after only two days illness and most deservedly esteemed and lamented by a large circle of relatives and acquaintances, Mr. Hugh CARLYON, bookseller and printer, aged 41 years.

I am sure we have the same family line here please do contact me

Just found this which I think is marriage of parents above :
Keverne, St. 25-Aug 1896
 Groom :         Edward  WHITE
                      36 Widow
 Rank:            Farm Labourer
Residence      St Anthony
 Father          William White
 Rank :           Labourer

 Bride            Susan Eustis EUSTIS
 Age              24

 Residence    St Keverne
Father          William Eustis
 Rank            Labourer

Going by this John & Edward & James are from his previous marriage
I was hoping that his father being William White might have been Margaret's Husband but  sadly I have he died in 1893 would have thought it would have deceased if him and also I know his trade was a Blacksmith

Hi Tiggi

My Aunt is the daughter of my Grandmother's second husband, so is not related to me by blood. I had an amount of Laity family tree work sent to me by Eric Busby, a CFHS member, who is also descended in the same generation as my step-Aunt who is now 70.

She was disinterested in any research on the 'White' line as she keeps in contact but didn't know about the Laitys.

George Harrop Laity is the earliest one on Eric's tree, being born in 1832, and I have not pursued anything further for the last 3 years because of lack of interest on the part of my Aunt.

Your 'Bennetts' may not be anything to do with mine. By an interesting coincidence, my cousin, the Reverend Barrington Bennetts, is also in the drinks business, being the part-owner and Landlord of the Seven Stars on Falmouth Moor.
