I have now found out that the family name was Groth and not Grott!  It also appears that Ferdinand was actually Jacob Ferdinand Groth and his father was Jacob Abraham Groth (he was named as Frederick Grott on Ferdinand's marriage certificate).  I have been given information about Ferdinand's siblings, so I now have a more complete picture of my ancestor's family.

Ferdinand and his siblings were baptised in St Katherine's Kirche, Danzig and St Barbara's Kirche, Danzig.

It is very satisfying to find information that I had been searching for, for more than 30 years!
