Oundle baptism - 15 September 1872
« on: Tuesday 22 September 15 18:51 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone would be able to check the baptism of Emily Charlotte ALLEN who was baptised in Oundle on 15 September 1972.  Her mother was Lavinia Charlotte ALLEN (although this is sometimes transcribed as Luvinia).  The birth was registered Q4 1871 3b 190.  I don't know which Church would have been used but she lived at the Grocers Shop, North Street, Oundle, with her parents.

I know some baptism records show the name of the 'reputed' father, but I would imagine the section for father will be blank.

Thank you if you are able to help.

She was baptised on 15/9/1872 at the Parish Church, Oundle.

You are quite right -- no father's name. Mother Lavinia Charlotte Allen.

It might be worth checking the County Archives to see if any Affiliation Order was taken out by Lavinia against the father.

Thank you for your quick response.  I obtained my information from FamilySearch where they have transcribed the mother's name as Luvinia Charlotte Allen not Lavinia.  I assume you have access to the Parish Record - does this give an address and could you tell me what it says re parents.  I have parish records from another area where the comment 'reputed father's name' is added when the mother is not married.  Does the Parish Record give a date of birth - some do.  I have never heard of an Affiliation Order - thanks for the suggestion - I will check this out.

Hi again,

The baptism is included in the Northamptonshire parish Baptisms on the Ancestry site. No birth date shown -- abode simply Oundle.

You may find 'reputed fathers' given in the older parish records - where the Poor Law Guardians had forced the mother to reveal the father's name. This was so that the Parish could make an order against him to pay towards the upkeep of the baby. Hence the Parish wouldn't have to fork anything out from their funds.

Later the parish records were in a set format throughout the country - so the vicars or scribes couldn't really fit in little comments.

An affiliation order (also anciently known as a Bastardy Bond) was an order taken out before the Justices to make a father pay towards an illegitimate child. Many survive in County Archives -- if there is a catalogue - search under the mother's name.

In addition - you may find articles in local newspapers -- where a man has been brought up for failing to pay the maintenance.
