Scarborough photo Ellis. Can anyone restore and date please.

Trying again as I posted a photo that had been poorly restored.

Have now posted the original which I believe was before 1855.  The photo is in very poor condition, is extremely thin and pasted onto card.  If anyone can bring it back to life I would be really grateful.  Also if anyone can put a date to it that would be great.

Thank you Japeflakes.  I am really interested that the roof does not have a gable end. When the building was altered in the later picture it has a flat roof and there are more windows at the front.  We always thought that the fire damage was the reason for the flat roof but, fire or not, it appears to have been built up when he expanded his business.

Thank you peterjohn.  The picture looks clearer.  Difficult when the original is so poor

These buildings still stand on Scarborough's seafront.  The building next to the Ellis one to the right is King Richard III's house.

There has now been a development in that I have found a family painting of the original photograph which was kindly restored here by Japeflakes and Peterjohn.  I have posted a photo which shows the roof to be very different to what we thought.    The painting shows the women in the picture (she has added some in) in full length dress when they are in ankle length skirts in the original.

I have had a walk down the sea front and the building is similar today. This raises confusion as the picture posted is before James Ellis took over the whole building and altered it - changing the roof by raising the front. Yet now it is back to how it was originally.

Also I apologise for misinformation - this building is not next to the King Richard III house which is further on to the right of the Ellis building.
