Black Horse Pub, Yorke Street, Wrexham
« on: Sunday 20 September 15 11:04 BST (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone has any information/history of the Black Horse in Yorke Street. I have discovered that my great grandfather, James Allen and his wife Isabella Milne/Allen were the landlords for a time between the wars.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve, Anc have a will for Isabella Allen 11 Yorke St Wrexham wife of James Allen. She died 22 May 1933 and left her money to Janet Evelyn McDowell spinster and William Williams cabinet maker.
323 pounds.
I hope this is of some help.

Thanks Tina
That's interesting. Isabella's maiden name was McDowell. So Janet must be  her sister. What is your interest in Isabella? Are you related?

That's a pity I'm always looking to share stuff. Thanks again. I think I might contact the Wrexham archives or arrange a trip there one day.

The Black Horse was once known as The Old Hop Pole.  I don't know when it changed its name.

Just found out the pub was originally on the other side of  Yorke Street and was called the Hop Pole Inn and originally was a town house belonging to the Puleston family of Hafod y Wern .  The original pub was also called the Old Black Horse and the Royal Ship. It moved across the road after 1836 and became the Black Horse in it's present position.  All the buildings on the other side of the road were demolished in the 1970's I think.

I have this photo taken about 1925 which is probably about the time my great grandfather was there.
