Nearest I have had for years, worth sending for death certificate.
This is the nearest one I can find on Freebmd.
But it is in the first quarter of 1885.

Could there be a delay in registering the death as it was an accident?

If an inquest was held, the death will be registered in the quarter when the inquest was completed. Particularly if there was an adjournment, this may be some time after the actual death and the entry may be in a later quarter than you anticipate. The coroner can authorise the burial before the inquest, but the death cannot be registered until after the inquest verdict

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  I am going to send for the death certificate in the hope of getting any information otherwise it will end up on the growing pile of wrong certificates.  Win some, loose some seems to be my luck with certificates.

According to newspaper reports the inquest was held 9th Jan 1885, unfortunately Evan and three others were killed when a rope broke when they were descending for work, only info gleaned about Evan Hughes was that he was married, had a family and was a member of the Permanent Relief Fund.

I have managed to find newspaper accounts of the two December inquests which were defered, but not the Jan one.
info from those accounts:
he was identified by his brother John.
He had four children. Both would fit with "my" Evan
But one account says
"His children are with his mother in Caernarvonshire, it is believed."
His children were with his mother but in Montgomeryshire
Will you please tell me where you found the account of the January index.

Hi,
Western Mail 9th Jan 1885 (available Findmypast)  Conclusion of the Coroners Inquiry, Treharris Mining Accident.
This account consists mainly of the evidence of John Dodds. There are no details or clues for  Evan Hughes in this account unfortunately.
