Tipper family of Gloucestershire

Hi folks,

Am attempting to find anything, other than marriage and death records, on Abraham Tipper, born c1785 in Gloucestershire (maybe Stroud area), died in Gloucester (St Nicholas) I think in 1838.
 
According to the parish register of his marriage his fathers name was George Tipper. He married Hannah Sweetman, daughter of John Sweetman, in 1823, 3 years after the birth of their eldest daughter, Elizabeth.

What was his occupation?

The majority of people didnt do anything in their lives which would leave any surviving record, other than be christened, married and buried!   If he was a man of property of high social standing you may find a Will or documents relating to his property. If in trade you may find apprenticeship records. If a criminal you may find court details. Most of this sort of thing is not online, but would be at the relevant local record office. But we are talking a minority, for most people a christening, marriage, christenings of their own children, and burial is what you get!

Elizabeth TIPPER, d/o Abraham & Hannah, a Labourer of Middle Street, Stroud, bap. at St Lawrence, Stroud, 14th May 1820.
Abraham TIPPER m. Hannah SWEETMAN at St Lawrence, Stroud, 1st September 1823, by Banns.
I found NO trace of a burial for Abraham.

Abraham Tipper of the parish of St Nicholas aged 53 was buried at St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester 16 April 1838.

There is a report in the Gloucester Journal of 27 December 1837 in the City Police Intelligence section:

WEDNESDAY__John Barton was charged with assaulting Abraham Tipper.  The complainant, an elderly man, who obtains a livelihood by vending nuts, &c. stated that the defendant had inveigled his (complainant's) wife away from him, she having also at the time all his money in her possession, the latter, though not to any great amount being probably much the more serious loss. Two of his children had eloped with her, but these had been sent back to him. A day or two ago, during his professional peregrinations with his basket of fruit, he called in at the Duke public house in the Island, where he found some of the gentle sex of that sympathetic neighbourhood upbraiding Mr Barton for his conduct.  Barton, on seeing the complainant, pulled him forcibly into the room, and after offering to treat him with some ale, and observing that he had still  some of his (Tipper's) money left, he pulled his nose and otherwise abused him.  By the advice of a person present, Tipper went away to another house, the Star, to which he was followed by  defendant, and again abused.  The same day also he happened inopportunely to go into the Squirrel, where he encountered his frail rib and her gallant, and again came off second best in a contest (principally of words) which ensued.  A portion of his statement as to what occurred at the Duke was corroborated by an impartial witness, but according to whom the assault, as far as he witnessed it, was of a very trifling nature.  The defendant was accordingly convicted and fined 5s. and the expences.

Hi Lizdb, Victor and Galium,

That sounds like my Abraham. 

Victor, according to Elizabeth's marriage records he was a 'Fruiterer' (1st marriage) and a 'Costermonger' (2nd marriage). I believe a costermonger is a fruiterer.

Galium, that is priceless!! Love it. Poor Abraham! I don't suppose the same newspaper has an account of his death?

I couldn't see any other reference to Abraham, or his wayward wife, but that doesn't mean there are none.  The newspaper collection I searched is The British Newspaper Archive, which has its own pay per view site:

It seems that the findmypast free offer only extends to people who are not already registered with them.  Thanks, though, for the tip. I will just have to 'pay per view'. I hadn't considered FindMyPast to search.  Only because it's another one that has to be paid for and I already have a full subscription to Ancestry.com.  They don't have the newspaper archive that FindMyPast does though
