Another brick in the wall!
« on: Tuesday 12 July 05 17:36 BST (UK) »
I am sure there are lots of Browns out there hitting the same wall in the mid 1800s!
I have a birth certificate for my grandfather in 1869 which give the address as 1 Robert St, district Strand, sub-district Charing Cross.
His parents were Honorah Kelleher and James John Joseph Brown.
I have tried the 51, 61 and 71 census with both names and struck out.  Honora'h parents (according to family notes) were Joanna Millar and Jeremiah Kelleher - no luck in the census with them either. I know Honorah was baptized on April 24th 1836 in the church St Mary Assumed into Heaven, and an address of Warwick St. Westminster is also written down, but I don't know if that is the church or the home.  Our family seems to have been RC with both Gparent's.  I checked the Westminster RC diocese website but couldn't find a church of that name - HELP?!

I know that there is an RC Church known as "Warwick Street" - it's in the Soho area.  I've just had a look at the RC Diocese of Westminster site and agree that the information is fairly well buried!  However:

Quote
Parish: Warwick Street
Deanery: Westminster
Church: Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory
Parish Address: 24 Golden Square, London, W1F 9JR
Tel: (020) 7437 1525
Fax: 020 7025 1598
Email: warwickstreet[AT]rcdow.org.uk (*)

Good luck with your searching.

Hi,

Ancestry.com has a huge number of typo errors. I think that the transcribers have not much expertise reading old handwriting - some of the errors are blatantly obvious. So have you tried searching for variations of surnames or wildcard searches? Typically you will see "nn" transcribed as "m", "r" as "n" and vice versa. There are loads of others but I can't remember right now!
