From Liverpool to Denmark - Margaret, James and children
« on: Saturday 12 September 15 22:29 BST (UK) »
I have had so much help - this Forum is very good, thanks all!

This time I just want to ask if any may know/or may find informations about my family who left Liverpool for Denmark.
The irish born Margaret Mellon b.1847 married the Danish seaman James Morrison b. 1836 (Jens Mogensen) in 1865, they got three children (Ellen, Mary Ann and James), James was born 1870, December. Herafter they all left for Denmark, Hornbaek town, Elsinore City:

1) Do we have any records about this family going to Denmark in the period 1871-1873? How would they all have got to Denmark at all if no records is to be find?

2) Do we have any records about James Morrison working as a seaman between 1860-1873?
So far we know about one, that he was on the Canada, Seafarers of the Atlantic Provinces, voyage departure date 15 May 1867 - Arrival date 5 Aug 1867.

3) James Morrison also had an older brother Jens Peter Mogensen (in english it might have been Morrison too, but I do not know how it would sound in english)
Best regards

Not all passenger lists are available so they could easily have gone to Denmark without any record being found.
Where did they marry?
Have you found them living in the UK and if so where and when?

There are many sites coming up in a google search for Denmark genealogy resources in particular FamilySeach.org has records for all over the world.

There are no Passenger Lists in the UK dating before 1890 - and then only Trans-Atlantic and long haul.

Travel via Hull would be the probable route to Denmark.
Maybe using DFDS, which was formed in 1866

Thank you very much, very fine informations.

The Irish Margaret Mellon b. 25 Aug 1847 married James Morrison in Liverpool in 1865, and left for Denmark between 1871-1873. At that time he had been working as a seaman, before and after their marriage.

I only have one record showing me where he worked for some month in 1867.

It is a puzzle where in Ireland she came from - she must have left between 1861 and 1865, since she is not recorded at the Liverpool Census 1861, but is in 1871. Her father was Michael Mellon (draper), and her aunt Catherine Mellon (dress maker) b.1841-1843.

Hope you experience and research skills may find something I am not able to find;-), Please.

Best regards

Irish records are notoriously poor but there are more coming online all the time have a look at this site http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ and keep going back to see what's new.

Yes, if you get a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast you will find quite a lot.
