Many thanks to Gibel and heatherjulie for their helpful responses. 

I have so much information about the Allen family but cannot find a marriage (or death for John Cassidy).  It also seems strange that someone from Oundle would end up in Ashton under Lyne.  The only possible census for John Cassidy is a 'James' Cassidy on the 1851 census (Ashton Barracks) where he is described as aged 19, single, born in London, and musician in regimental band.
