James Anderson 92nd Highlanders Served 1811 - 1829
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 10:26 BST (UK) »
I have a James ANDERSON who married a Mary Morrison in 1827 Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was born in 1795 in Lanarkshire to John Anderson and Elisabeth Foyer.

I have come across a service record for one James Anderson, born c.1795 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. (see attached)

What are peoples opinions please on how likely is it that this is the correct person? He married in 1827 so was in service at this time however the record seems to show that he served 14 out of the 15 years enlisted...(1 year enough time to be married?)

I'm struggling to read what the document says - particularly the discharge notes and general conduct (apart from the not good part!)

Many, many thanks for thoughts/opinions.

This regiment returned from Jamaica in May 1827, to Edinburgh. After 11 months they moved to Glasgow and in August 1828 moved to Ireland. Do you know the actual date of the wedding in Lanark? Or do you know if any of his children were born in Ireland?

If you can get to the National Archives the muster book for 1827 may tell you if he got furlough from Edinburgh. The reason they mention the East or West indies is that soldiers received a 50% bonus for service in these places, due to the high risk of catching a tropical disease. The 7 years and 341 days includes time at sea. He also got two years extra pensionable service for Waterloo.

Hard to read the writing. Suggest: “He appears on the Prize Lists as having Received prize money for the periods (?) comprised under the Deeds(?) of Vittoria and Toulouse, as also Waterloo”.

His under age service points to a date of birth of about 25th March 1796

The scribble at the top continues overleaf and is the surgeons notes. He enlisted for life. In reality this meant a medical after 21 years service and most were discharged then. His three years under-age does not count. But if you take half of his West Indies service and add it to the 17 years and 92 days you get 20 years and 363 days.

At the bottom of the second page a neater hand says 'Reduction' and "when in Dublin he fell down the stairs of the house where billeted and sprained his left leg. Considerable ? followed etc.

Reduction means the army was being reduced in size. So he was surplus to requirements, injured and had served his time.

This soldier was still alive in the 1870s. There are notes about his pension on the second page.

Hi Ken,

Many thanks for your detailed reply and help.

The wedding date I have is 17th July 1827 in Barony, Lanark.

I only have one child Agnes Anderson born in 1830 in Glasgow.

The James Anderson I have birth date is 14th March 1795 (parents John Anderson and Elisabeth Foyer)

Honestly I don't know how accurate my information is with James Anderson - I can't be sure yet as it based off family information and Ancestry records. Ideally I'd go onto scotlandspeople but I haven't any credits at the moment.

You have been of great assistance thanks again Ken!
