Look up request please 1901/1911 census
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 07:50 BST (UK) »
Hi could any of you lovely people please look up James Samuel Miller on the 1901/1911 census. I know he lived in Newcastle in 1922, but not sure of his birth place or place of residence at the census time. He was possibly born 1896 and his father was Samuel Miller possibly born Lithuainia.

This man is a bit of a mystery to me, we knew him as Joseph Samuel Miller, so the name James was a bit of a suprise to us

Thanks ainsley :)

Did he die in 1922?

Death Registration, from FreeBMD:

December qtr 1922
Newcastle Upon Tyne district     vol 10b, page 117

Miller, Joseph     age 33

That would indicate a birth c.1889

Hi, he was married in 1922 to Margaret Patterson he states his name as James Samuel Miller, although we always knew him as Uncle Joe. on his marriage certificate he has his soldiers number, but since looking through all my paperwork today i have him with the same service number as joseph samuel. This man is such a mystery to me

Thanks ainsley ???

FindMyPast has a Royal Artillery attestation in 1919 for a Joseph Samuel Miller b abt 1900 in Middlesborough, it gives a service number of 1018696 and a former service number of 285210. It sounds like he must have been in a different regiment previously. But as he's only 19 it can't have been for long. Do either of these numbers match what you know.?
What age is given on marriage cert?
Marriage cert should also give his father's name and occupation

(just saw you said his father's name was samuel)
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge

Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)

There's a birth for a Joseph (no middle name / initial) registered in Middlesbrough district Q4 1895. He would be 26 in 1922 if the marriage date was earlier in the year than his birthday.
