James Niel, Anderton help deciding possible parents
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 03:35 BST (UK) »
I have another query with my Neil family.  I have decided to start a new post following on from the information I have received in my previous post
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=730182.0

I have the marriage from the Barony marriage register - 6 August 1820 - "James Niel Bookbinder Anderton and Sarah Lindsay residing there"  I thought I would try to go back another generation and look for James's baptism.  I know from his death registration in 25/4/1832, Edinburgh he died from cholera at age 33, so I thought I would look with the date range 1796 to 1802.  I have narrowed it to two possibilities - 1. James son of James Niel and Agnes Park 28/2/1802, Barony, Glasgow City, Lanark and 2. James son of James Neil and Agnes Fairservice 21/1/1799, Glasgow, Lanark.
I would appreciate some input as to the best candidates (and its only a guess, I know) would the location of Barony and spelling of surname (same as marriage & death register) but incorrect age be a better choice than the age being correct and location as just Glasgow.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Lea-Anne

Hi, it is possible that your James Niel was not born in Glasgow at all. I know himself and Sarah married in the Barony but it is possible that he moved to Glasgow from elsewhere. Do you have any idea about the names of any of James & Sarah's children besides Samuel? This may provide you with clues as to his parentage. Kim

If James was a burgess, the admissions register might provide further details. It would name his father, if his father was a burgess. If he was admitted by right of his wife, it would name her father and his occupation. The Glasgow burgess registers have been published and are available to read on-line somewhere. Since he moved to Edinburgh, it might be worth trying the Edinburgh burgess lists too.

Remember that not all baptisms were recorded and not all records survive. It might be neither of the possibilities you have found.

I do know from the 1851 census that there were 2 other sons, John born abt 1823 Glasgow and James born abt 1827 Glasgow.  Samuel was the middle son born abt 1825 (in Edinburgh if you can believe the Wikipedia article).  So far I have been unable to find any of their baptisms.  John was a bookbinder as well in Glasgow.
I am doing my research from afar (Australia) and am a newbie at Scotish research. I had never heard of a burgess before.  I did have a look for burgess admissions register online and did find the Glasgow and Edinburgh records but nothing for Neil or Niel.
The search goes on.

Hi Lea-Anne,

You may consider the spelling "Neill" as a possibility too  ???

This is a listing of all Neil's from the Book Trade Index at the NLS http://www.nls.uk/catalogues/scottish-book-trade-index

I do not see the family in the Burgesses & Guild Brethren (Glasgow 1551-1846).  You can also send the Mitchell (library) an email asking if they anything the family relating to bookbinding.

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

Just for accuracy in your records etc the spelling is Anderston rather than Anderton.
