Woodfield 15 year brick wall baptism look up
« on: Wednesday 02 September 15 22:28 BST (UK) »
Hi

Would it please be possible if anyone can please help me.

I am struggling to locate who my 4th great grandmother was and defiantly from?

My great grandnother married in Wentnor Shropshire in 1830 to Thomas Potter

She is shown born outside the county in the 1841 census, she died June 1850

As per the census and burial, her birth is between 1804 and 1806

I have searched and searched  Mary Woodfield

I do not know why she ended up in Shropshire or who with?

I have contacted the vicar for Wentnor with no success for any further Woodfields. I have also spoken to the methodist vicar with again no success

There is Woodfields in the area but trying to connect them is difficult

There is a Francis Woodfield with Mary having 3 girls baptised between 1828 and 1831 at Shelve where Mary Potter nee Woodfield Is buried

I have found 2 Francis Woodfields . 1 was born Birmingham in 1803 to Richard and Susanna and 1 found baptised Hitchin 1791 to Joseph and Ann

There is a few Mary Woodfield Baptised in Hitchin and Hexton

So I am sure there is connection.

A Maria Woodfield married in 1843in Wentnor, but I can not gain the marriage certificate as the register is not submitted. I was trying to gain her fathers name. Then after speaking to the vicars, I can not gain anything further

There is also a Jonathan Woodfield living in Shrewsbury

I would greatly appreciate any help with this, I am coming rather frustrated after all these years. I would love to know who she was.

Thank you to anyone in advance
Fiona

Hello Fiona

Have you tried obtaining the marriage certificate of Maria Woodfield from 1843 from the General Register Office? Even if the church register hasn't been sent to the local record office, the GRO should be able to provide a certificate from their copy - it's indexed as:
m. Edward THOMAS & Maria WOODFIELD, September Quarter 1843, Clun Registration District, Volume 18, Page 75
That should give you Maria's father's name, which may give you some further clues. I'd caution against jumping straight to Hertfordshire from Shropshire unless you have positive evidence that the Shropshire family had connections back to Hertfordshire - if the Hertfordshire lot are simply the closest you've found that's fairly weak evidence - it's a long way from Shropshire to Hertfordshire and whilst such long distance moves did occasionally happen they're unusual.

Good luck
Richard.

Hi Fiona,

We might have some common ancestors and it looks like you are ahead of me in the research.

I am researching Jane Potter, my great, great, great grandmother, who was born The Bog, Wentnor (near Shelve) 1837 ish (going by census dates). She married James Bright and lived in Clun.

There were two Jane Potters at The Bog, one to Thomas and Mary (your ancestors) this is the most likely one to be my ancestor, going by age. But also one to Richard and Ann who was a couple of years older.

I went to visit The Bog, don't know if you know the area, The Bog was an old lead mining village in the Stipperstone Hills. It's in the parish of Wentnor, but quite some distance from Wentnor, however, it's much closer to Shelve, so as I'm sure you've found out, the children were christened in Shelve. They will have lived in old miners cottages, these are all demolished now, as is the mine but there is a visitors centre and tea rooms which has some old photos of the mine and cottages.

So your link to a Francis Woodfield in Shelve is a strong possibility.

You might be able to help me. You seem to have found details for the marriage of Thomas and Mary Potter, can you send me details? Also Mary's death, I had guess 1850 as this was when son Thomas was born but father Thomas was recorded as a widow in 1851. Maybe she died in childbirth?

The big mystery for me is to prove which Jane Potter is my ancestor, if you have any evidence to support the Jane Potter from The Bog (Wentnor) that married James Bright is the one born to Thomas and Mary rather than to Richard and Ann that would be amazing.

Thanks,

Andy
