Findmypast are free this weekend so I suggest you look at all the Walter Skelton petty session records in Newtownbarry.

I have a paid membership to findmypast anyway so that won't be a problem. I'm not sure that death is the right Walter as his birth is 1813 which is only just 10 years before 1824. Thanks for looking anyway and I thought that Walter Skelton was probably right in Glaslacken in the Griffiths Valuation but it's nice to see someone else confirm it.

Thank as well Carole, good to be able to confirm which Johanna the burial was for.

Death ages aren't always right ~ most were guesswork.

Death certs here don't often give great leads ~ next of kin registering the death can be the best lead but sometimes it can just be a doctor or neighbour.

Oh and just to note:

We are still just working on a presumption that your Skeletons were originally from Wexford, based on Walter lodging with a Wexford family.

While Walter Skelton isn't a common Irish name it does crop up elsewhere so treat Wexford 'lightly' for now.

Did you find James on any other census with a county of origin ?

Yeh i'm keeping all this research purely on paper till I can confirm that the Wexford Walter Skelton is correct.

No I've been unable to find James Skelton, Johanna Doyle or Jacob Skelton on any census records and only have the younger Walter on censuses from 71 and later.

Looking at the petty sessions records there are 5 appearances of Walter Skelton of Glaslacken owing money through loans and such between 1838 and 1850. Is this normal as it seems to amount to him taking a total amount of loans of at least £7 9s 12d.

Hum,

That's a fair amount of money for back then.

It was the run up to Great Famine too so I'm surprised anyone was getting / giving loans.

While it's great to see Petty Session records I sure wish there was more info on them for us genealogists  ;D
