The marriage certificate will give his father's name and occupation but will not say where he was born. This is the correct way to progress with your search.  :)

You may be able to skip buying George's birth certificate (though many people would advise against this) - depending on who he names as his father on the marriage certificate, and what his age is. There are two Glaister families in the 1891 census with children called George - both have parents John and Mary which may cause problems. Some more research into the families might clarify which is which. Of course the plus side to purchasing George's birth certificate is that you will find out his mother's surname which will avoid any incorrect assumptions.

Please pop back when the marriage certificate arrives if you require any help.

If you go to the bottom of the rootschat page in the dark panel under "Your Tools" you will see "surname interests". There is someone else searching for Glaister in Cumberland if you wish to try to contact them (though they may no longer be active on rootschat).

Added. I just checked the two Johns on the 1891 census - one is a brewer and the other is a Journeyman tailor, so it will be interesting to see if any of that tallies with what the marriage certificate tells you.

This may fit in with the Journeyman Tailor as on the census he has a middle initial:
Marriages Sep 1880
Glaister  John Joseph     Whitehaven  10b 740
Robinson  Mary     Whitehaven  10b 740

There are a couple of possibilities for the Brewer:
Both in 1860 in Wigton. One marries a Mary Wallas, and the other marries Mary Ann Holliday.

It's a bit too early to speculate and I'm getting ahead of myself but the info is there in case it is needed at a later date.

Good luck.

Hi

If I have the right family then

George Glaister and Isabella Allison marrey Whitehaven Dec Qtr 1883
Son George birth reg Whitehaven Dec Qtr 1888
daughter born Newcastle Dec Qtr 1890
1891 Census has family in Byker, Northumberland Mother in law Sarah Allison seems to confirm this
1895 possible death Isabel Glaister age 28 June Qtr 1895 Toxteth Park, Liverpool
George remarries Liverpool Dec Qtr 1895 to Laura Bone
1901 census family in Birkenhead Laura on census as Norah.

Comparing the George Glaister/Sarah Graham marriage certificate with the 1911 census should hopefully confirm the family. Occupations, address etc

Hi

The daughter born Newcastle Dec Qtr 1890 was Isabella, the 1891 census has her as 5 but I reckon the original household form (which we can't access) probably said 5 months. That would fit with the birth registration and the later censuses.
