1841 census look up request . John WAKEFIELD b 1796
« on: Monday 31 August 15 12:30 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the family of my husbands GG grandmother Jane Sarah Wakefield. Father, John, and the family left England in 1849 to settle in South Africa. I think that her mother was Elizabeth, and her sisters eleanor and emily Thanks for any help.

Hi & welcome to RootsChat. :)

I believe I have found the correct family in John Street Lambeth on the 1841. They consist of John born 1796 not in county, Elin(sic) born 1806 in county, Jane born 1831 in county & Elenar (sic) born 1838 in county.

Ancestry is FREE until this evening so if you have the time take a look at the christenings for Wakefield children of John & Elizabeth as there are quite a few. Here's a quick rundown.

Elizabeth christened 26 Nov 1826 St Pancras address Charlotte Street.
Jane Sarah christened 30 Mar 1828 St Pancras address Charlotte Street.
Sarah christened 18 April 1830 St Pancras address Charlotte Street.
John christened 7 Sept 1831 St Pancras address Charlotte Street.
Fanny christened 27 March 1836 St Pancras address Charlotte Street.
Eleanor christened 7 June 1840 St Pancras address Charlotte Street.
Emily Albertine christened 3 Oct 1842 Lambeth St Mary address John Street, (same as the 1841 census).
Albert Ormond Adolphus christened 30 March 1845 St Pancras address Albany Street.

I'm pretty sure these are all children for John & Elizabeth as for the first christening of daughter Elizabeth John is a Pastry Cook & all other christenings he is a Confectioner.

Hope this helps.

You are more than welcome Nikki. :D

I had a quick look at the burials & I think all of the children apart from Jane, Eleanor & Emily died as infants. There is also a marriage for John to an Elizabeth Webb in 1825 at St Anne Soho that looks a possible although it seems to be recorded 3 times with different dates, not sure what that is all about. ???

Hi again Maddie
I am searching and printing from Ancestry as fast as I can!! ;) :) Thanks so much for telling me that it is free for today.
About to go and look for the burials!
Only Jane Emily Eleanor and Albert accompanied their parents on the Henry Tanner to Durban Natal in 1849 so I think you are right nthat may of the children must have died!. Would be interesting If Johns wife was an Elizabeth Webb as that was my maiden name!! :)
Thanks again, off to do some more hunting!
Best wishes
Nikki
PS. If you would like to see why I am on the hunt for Wakefields I have a blog I am working on on Wordpress caled Finding Polly Shortt - It's an uphill climb

Hi Nikki

I have just read your blog, what a fascinating journey & how lucky you have been to find so much info on the net for your "Polly Shortt".

I was pleased to read that John Wakefield was a Confectioner in SA, at least I knew I had found the correct family. ;)

If there is anything else you need help with do shout. :D
