William Johnson b. 1776 (est) Dryfield, Gloucestershire.
« on: Monday 31 August 15 10:25 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information or leads to my g-g-g-grandfather. He is listed on the 1851 census (Bassaleg hamlet, Dyffryn, Newport, Monmouthshire) as being being 75 years of age (therefore born about 1776), a former shepherd. and born in Dryfield, Gloucestershire. He was living with his son Thomas and family. It is thought that his wife was Ann who was born in 1779 in Monmouthshire (uncorfirmed). She does not appear on the 1851 census record so I assume that she was deceased.

From my research I know that Dryfield could be two places. One Dryfield Farm near Winchcombe and the other Driffield near Cirencester. I have researched online and visited Driffield, finding no clear link to any name of Johnson in the local church or from talking to locals - however I haven't inspected any official records yet.  I know that Winchcombe however did have a number of Johnson families living there around the time that William was born. Around the time of William's birth I have found three marriages listed:-

William Johnson & Elizabeth Best, 8 May 1774
John Johnson & Elizabeth Broadway, lic., 5 Jan. 1775
William Johnson & Elianor Goodard, lic., 11 Apr. 1779

Other than this I have no information. However I do have extensive information of his descendants. If anyone has any information I would be more than happy to share my findings.

Hi,
I did find a further marriage that may be of interest:-
Thomas JOHNSON of Harnhill m. Ann BOULTON at St Mary, Driffield, 8th December 1777.
Driffield and St Michael & All Angels, Harnhill are in close proximity to each other.
