Where is she buried? Mary Bevitt (Gager)
« on: Saturday 29 August 15 10:26 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am having a little trouble working out which cemetery one of my ancestors by the name of Mary Bevitt (Nee Gager) in buried at. Here is a little info about her...

Mary was from Lynn in Norfolk, and stood just 4'7" tall, she had a fair complexion, and hazel eyes. She may have been a widow when she married Joseph Bevitt as she was only 33 yrs old. Mary 'Beverton' as she was called was tried at Old Bailey on 20th of April 1814, for being in possession of forged money and sentenced to 14 yrs. Mary was described as a servant, 56 years old. On embarking on the 'Lord Melville' (1) in 1816 she was listed as a widow accompanied by her four children.  Mary Ann, Sarah, Isabella and Joseph. For the voyage she was provided with 1 spare jacket or gown, 1 spare petticoat, 2 spare shifts, 2 spare handkerchiefs, 2 spare pairs of stockings and 2 spare pairs of shoes.  Mary arrived on 24th of February 1817. The 1822 Census of NSW shows Mary as having obtained her Ticket of Leave, 9 years early. She was working as a midwife and residing in York St, Sydney.  The house was a little full however with five lodgers.  In April of 1828 Mary received her Certificate of Freedom. This stated her year of birth as 1761. Mary met her maker on the 12th January, 1830, while still doing her duty as one of the midwives of the Colony. An extract, taken from "The Australian" of 13th of January 1830, stated; " An inquest was convened at the Flower Pot, York St, on Saturday last, on the body of Mrs. Bevitt, midwife, who died suddenly during the evening previously, after having got out of bed to attend a patient.  Major Smeatham presiding, the jury returned a verdict of - "death by the visitation of God". She was 68 years old.

I am not even sure if she has a marked grave. I am planning to head up NSW way in the next 1-2 months and I am trying to find the final resting spot of as many of my family members as possible. So don't be surprised if most of my posts are regarding cemeteries in the coming weeks!

Any help would be great. As she died in 1830, records might not even exist.

Cheers  :)

Thank you cupoflife.  :) Least that clears that up! Little shocked to hear a railway was built on top of it! Wasn't expecting that!  :o

Re Devonshire Street Cemetery :)

" Devonshire Street Cemetery Board (see also Botany Cemetery Trust)

When Central Railway Station was being built on this site in 1901, about one third of the monuments and remains of those interred in the former burial ground were relocated to metropolitan and country cemeteries."

Thanks JM! Do you think it is possible Mary Bevitt was relocated or unlikely?

Hi Noy,

I wonder if you have sought to validate the information about Mary BEVATT (with an A) who arrived on the Lord Melville Feb 1817.

There is a book that has a great deal of information (submitted and also researched) but Mary’s surname is BEVATT in those records.

The book is In the Wake of the Lord Melville.   The ISBN is  9780646427102.

http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/5009195

There’s four pages devoted to Mary BEVATT and her offspring.

Sometimes the spelling of a surname can be important, particularly when trying to locate re-interments.

Thank you JM  ;D :), I haven't heard of the book before and that would be my Mary in it! She brought 4 children with her. I will have to get a hold of it when I head to NSW. I hadn't thought of trying her name with a 'A'. It really does show up how much a simple spelling change can make to research!

Yes,  and of course, spelling was as non standard then as it is becoming now.  (I hope that makes good sense !)

The book is quite recent and likely still available for purchase.   It may well be in your local public library, or available on inter-library loan.
