Wonder if Anthony went north of the border ?

Tried checking deaths for Anthony Hamill in Scotland up to 1970 but there was no record of anyone who might fit. Neither was there a marriage which could be attributed to him.

Sandra

How can someone just vanish?
Maybe he emigrated to another country?
America?
Australia?

Oops :P :P

Looks like I misread Archie Hamill's death.  The print is so small... the lady beside him came from Maryport - a Mrs Ethel Hazelridge McClyment.

Sorry about that.  Total red herring!!!!!

Just searched for Hamill and Maryport and that is the only thing that popped up in the Canadian newspapers on FindMyPast.  Please ignore!!

Will try Toronto Star and Globe and Mail.

Poor fellow does seem to have vanished.  He looks so young in his photo!

RK --- sorry again for the error :'(

He doesn't seem to show up on passenger lists to the USA or Australia - wondered if he had a middle name and started using that but couldn't see anything under James either, which was his father's name.

Who says he went to Canada ?

Hi,

Not seeing an Anthony or Tony Hamill in the Toronto papers either.  :'(

I think Sandra is right about the middle name.  Also, is there any possibility he might have changed his name altogether.... maybe using a mother's maiden name or some such thing?   He certainly isn't leaving us any clues!!

If he really wanted to disappear, it looks like he succeeded!

Your idea of following the pension is a good one.  Not sure how to do that, but it might provide some sort of lead.

My family were told he was last seen leaving on a ship to Canada.
No idea who witnessed this.
Wonder if my family reported him missing at the time?
Until the 1921 census comes out I don't even know who he was living with at Crosby Street, Maryport.
My late grandfather might have known more details but he died in 1987.
Maybe he moved away and changed his name?
Would he need a passport to go abroad back then?

You could try electoral registers for 29 Crosby Street Maryport in 1921 to see who was living there.

Something to check out - There was a marriage in Skipton Yorkshire of Anthony Hamill to Rose Bryden - June 1921 - 9a 98
A birth the following year for a James Hamill - Registered March 1922 - Skipton 9a 42
This James was born 9 December 1921 and passed away January 1993 -

Rose Ann Hamill and Anthony lived at 6 Bessie Street Skipton in 1922.

Hmm that's interesting.
Because Anthony's father was called James.
Be nice if it is our Anthony Hamill.

Sandra

You were correct SANDRA!
Bumped into my great aunty today and she told me Anthony married a Rose and lived in Yorkshire.
They had five children but he left them and departed from Southampton Docks on a ship for America in the 1930's?
She said it was sunk, so I'm guessing it was during WW2?
