Thomas Roome, Heanor
« on: Sunday 23 August 15 20:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm posting in the hope more than the expectation that someone might be able to help find a birth record for my g g grandfather Thomas Roome born in Heanor around 1842 as I've exhausted all the avenues (BMD etc) I can think of.

In 1851 9 year old Thomas is living with his Uncle William & Aunt Elizabeth Fretwell in Heanor and is listed as nephew. Elizabeth's maiden name was Roome. In 1841 the newly weds William & Elizabeth were living next door to Elizabeth's parents, John & Elizabeth Roome, two of their daughters, Mary aged 20 & Keziah aged 15 (or probably a bit older given the rounding down thing) and 6 year old William Roome, Mary's illegitimate son.

It's probable that Thomas is also illegitimate - no father is named on his marriage certificate - and it seems likely that one of Mary or Keziah is his mother, unless there are other siblings I've not unearthed. Mary (as well as both parents and possibly William as well - there's a limit to the number of death certificates I can afford!) died in the 1840's (after Thomas's birth) so it's all pointing to her as being his mother but I just can't be sure. Also I haven't been able to establish what happened to Keziah after 1841 so as to be able to rule her out.

Any help much appreciated.

Mike

In the early years of Civil Registration (started 1st July 1837), registration was not compulsory.
In fact, the onus was on the Registrar to find and register the births.

Thanks for the replies.

I did look at Thomas William Roome but he seems to be accounted for.

I'm not sure how I missed Keziah Roome's death but thanks for that. Assuming William is the William Roome who died 1842 that would mean all 5 members of the 1841 household having died within about 5 years of the census. I'm tempted to order a couple of the death certificates now to see if they died of the same thing.

Hi

FindMyPast have the record of William Roome's death, it says he was born c1835, so most probably Mary's son.
