Hi,
My ggrandfather was in the 2nd bt South Lancs and I know how difficult it is to find out about them. I believe it ceased to exist under that name in about 1950.
However, I was lucky in that my relative was in the first world war and quite a bit is documented about that especially in the Warrington Guardian Newspaper.
What time period are we talking about with your relative?
If its WW1 I might be able to help.
I don't think that there has been much indexed on WW2 so I can't help there.

Hi Jill!

My Granddad was in the 1st Battalion South Lancs (POWV) he was in the Boer War and WW1 but changed to the Rifle Brigade at some point!
I have been trying to find out as much as I can about the Regiment also -  as I'm working on the Honour Roll for the 1st battalion and hopefully the 2nd !!

How were you able to get the Warrington Guardian? - I've been having a hard getting that too!! - I'd really appreciate any help you could give me - or at least steer me in the right direction

Hi Annie,
I haven't been able to find out much about the Boar
war but this is what I did for the WW1 stuff.
My ggrandfather was killed in WW1, and I had his number from his military bible and confirmed it from the Commomwealth Graves Commision. This can be done online.
I then used this to obtain his WW1 medals card (online) at the National Archieves.
A real breakthrough came when I discovered that the Warrington Family History group have published pamphlets that index all the soldiers to page references in the Warrington Guardian.
They are in the series "Warrington's Great War Heroes"
these can be ordered online at www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk
I looked up my relatives and sent the page references to the British Newspaper Library,Collindale Ave,London
e- mail   newspapers@bl.uk with a request and they will get back to you.
Hope this helps
Jill C
P.s they hold copies of all UK newspapers- if you are lucky there might be a photo also.

Hi Jill

See -  the wonderful problem I have with my Granddad is -  that he came home!!
It sounds awful - but its so much easier to find information if they don't!!
I do have his medal card but it's for the Rifle Brigade!!! ::)

I know for sure - he was in the POWV (South Lancs ) because he went to Jersey in the Channel Islands  and married there!

I appreciate the sites especially the newspaper one - I'll try that right away!
If by any chance you would like to send me your Granddads stuff for the Honour Roll - I'd be thrilled to make sure all of your stuff was included !

Annie, try the Rifle Brigade website for some background, battles etc;and the usual trail from there to the official medal record,s.
Sadly,as I mentioned before, unless he was an officer,or won exemplary decorations, youv'e got the campaign medal's list to plow through.
The person that mayhave more info on this is 'manmack' very good at WW1 item's and armed service's type querie's.
The Badge look's very similar to the one I wore!
                    Luck,Goggy.
