I think if a child breathes it is considered a live birth.

When did you parents marry - is it possible the baby could have been registered in your mother's maiden name?

It is considered a live birth if the baby breathes - however I know of one case last year ( 2014 so far more recent) where the baby lived for half an hour but because he was born before viability (was 23 weeks) the doctor wouldn't sign a death certificate and said it was a miscarriage - which then meant the parents couldn't get a birth certificate either.

It is wrong, and there was a huge debate about it in a study day with me and a few others saying it was wrong and they should have had birth and death certs and others saying if born before 24 weeks then nothing (btw law is on our side and you should have both).  But if the doctors back then also believed that too premature births didn't count you may end up with that situation.

I believe the cut off for viability in the 1930s was 28 weeks

Hi
I am fairly sure he was full term as he weighed over 10 lb - the cause of the difficult birth- my mothers first child.

Hi
Am pretty positive (knowing my mother) that she wasn't pregnant before marraige. Probably not even likely to have been at marraige. Parents married at St Phillips Church, Litherland in September 1933.

Maybe look in West Derby registration District, in that case?

Officially if a child was born alive then the birth would have to be registered, and a burial could not take place if the death was not registered. Still births had to be registered from 1 July 1927. (Births and Deaths Act 1926).

I know that my parents had a son in 1933/34 born in a Nursing Home in Liverpool.
The boy lived for about twelve hours.
My parents are long dead & my elder sister (b.1938) cannot help.
Try as I may I have not found any record of either his birth or death.
Is it possible that no registration of the birth/death took place?
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Was it Park House in Waterloo, by any chance?

The GRO has a specialist team looking after the still-birth register.

It might be worthwhile giving them a call on 0300 123 1837 and asking their advice as there doesn't appear to be a birth or death registration.

As a sibling whose parents are deceased, you are eligible to apply for a still birth cert

I am fairly sure the birth was at Balliol? Nursing Home in Bootle (my sister was born there).
Thanks for the info re: still birth register I will give them a call.
