FYI,

If you do an ancestry.com search on the surname, input the parents names, restrict years to 1838 +/- 10 years, and restrict to Middlesex you will see many of the baptisms for the children of John and Elizabeth.  Is it possible his first names were John Francis?  If so there are children before Ann.  In particular John Thomas Monks, born Feb 18, 1829 to John Francis and Elizabeth, at Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, father's profession is Weaver.  Also Elizabeth Frances Monks born Mar 7, 1832, to John Francis and Elizabeth, at Holywell Lane, Shoreditch, father's profession is Weaver.

Hi

Wonder if this is him, a Non Conformist burial at Victoria Park Cemetery Hackney.

John MONKS of Quaker Street, Spitalfields, aged 57 yrs. Buried 8th April 1863.

Which may put his birth year c1806.

Elizabeth (LARCHER) MONKS was born 8 April 1808 in Spitalfields, so the 1871 census age is accurate.

John Monks was buried 8th April 1863 in Hackney cemetery, but Elizabeth seems to disappear after 1871.  I bought the death cert for an Elizabeth MONK 19 Jun 1873 Whitechapel - but it is not her.  I have gone cross-eyed looking at FreeBMD, but can't find a death for her.  Can anyone help?

(p.s. - I have all I need on Elizabeth up to 1861)

Many thanks
Philip

Have you ruled out the 1885 death Philip ?

There is a record of this woman in the Poor Law records at Stepney 1885

Elizabeth Monks aged 79, of ? Pipes Head Court. widow,  of John a weaver, was infirm when admitted:  31 Dec 1884, reason for discharge: Dead, 4 Jan 1885

Aged: 79 registered at Whitechapel March Qtr. 1885

Honestly, I expected better of me!  Foolishly, I made an assumption (yes, I know - a very silly thing to do!) that as I could not find Elizabeth on the 1881 census she must have died before then.  Popes Head Court was off Quaker Street where the family had previously lived, so it looks very promising.

Doh! (The Simpsons)
Stupid boy! (Captain Mainwaring, Dad's Army)
Whatta mistaka to make! (the Italian captain in 'Allo 'Allo).

Abashed and humbled, I'm heading off to order the cert from GRO.

A thousand thanks
Philip

You are very welcome Philip  ;D

Can't readily see her in 1881 either

EDIT: Whitechapel infirmary record, states she died of bronchitis
