Have you ruled out the 1885 death Philip ?
There is a record of this woman in the Poor Law records at Stepney 1885
Elizabeth Monks aged 79, of ? Pipes Head Court. widow,  of John a weaver, was infirm when admitted:  31 Dec 1884, reason for discharge: Dead, 4 Jan 1885
Aged: 79 registered at Whitechapel March Qtr. 1885

Honestly, I expected better of me!  Foolishly, I made an assumption (yes, I know - a very silly thing to do!) that as I could not find Elizabeth on the 1881 census she must have died before then.  Popes Head Court was off Quaker Street where the family had previously lived, so it looks very promising.

Doh! (The Simpsons)
Stupid boy! (Captain Mainwaring, Dad's Army)
Whatta mistaka to make! (the Italian captain in 'Allo 'Allo).

Abashed and humbled, I'm heading off to order the cert from GRO.

A thousand thanks
Philip

And the certificate has now arrived.
I am confident that this is my Elizabeth Monks (nee Larcher) as the age and address fit.

The search for the parents of John MONKS goes on!

Thank you all.
Philip

Time passes, and I still can't find a birth for John Monks c1808.

John Monks (bachelor) married Elizabeth Larcher 25 May 1828 Bethnal Green. (witnesses Andrew Larcher X and Saml Jones).
Earliest known address 1841 Crown Ct, Quaker Street, Spitalfields (later addresses around Quaker Street)
Occupation: silk weaver.
Ages given: 1841 census 30 (rounded!);1851 census 43; 1863 burial 57.
Children William, Ann, Sarah, John, Thomas, Mary, Henry (no obvious naming patterns or unusual names there).

There is a John Thomas Monks bapt 1803 son of Hugh, a drayman, who I have eliminated.
There are some MONKS families of silk weavers around Spitalfields at the time, but I can't find a baptism for John.

Could anyone bring a fresh pair of eyes to this search?

Many thanks
Philip
