Help With A Electoral Record
« on: Monday 17 August 15 13:16 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have just come across a rellie on a Electoral Register and i'm not quite  sure what part of it mean's the Register say's -
West, Yorkshire Electoral Register 1840-1942
Rotherham 1908
Name: Clarke, Charles Percy
Place of Abode : 46, Upper Haugh
Name of Qualification : Dwelling House (Successive)
Description of Qualifying Property : 2 Chapel Street; 13 Greenside, Greasbrough; 46 Nether Haugh
This may sound stupid but I would like to know what the Description of Qualifying Property mean's and all the different address'? and the part about the dwelling being successive what doe's that mean?
If anyone can help me, any bit of info is as always gladly recieved.
Thank you

To put it simply  :) Where the word "successive" appears in the registers it means that the elector had occupied, during the 12 months qualifying period, more than one property within the particular constituency, each of which was of a sufficient rateable value to qualify its occupier to vote.

Rented most likely, "successive" means moving from one to the other. It was quite common for families to move to better place when they had the money to, and to a cheaper place when not.
Shropshire: Bailey, Cadman, Chilton, Garbett, Pritchards
Yorkshire: Chilton, Cogan, Cooper, Farrar, Hammond, Nickless/Nicholls, Silkstone
Ireland: Brannan, Cogan, O'Connor
