Firstly, although there is absolutely no connection between the names Peter and Patrick, in Scotland they were regarded as interchangeable, so there is no problem there.

Possibilities to look for:

- If Peter called his first son James, perhaps pointing to a father of that name
- If the witnesses to the baptisms of Peter's children show a link to James's family
- If Peter witnesses the baptisms of the children of James's children
- If the family owned even a small piece of land (the parish register says "James... of...",     not "James... in...) the Register of Sasines might help
- the online catalogue of the National Records of Scotland might throw up something
- If a record of James's marriage survives, is there time for a Peter to be born?

Hi, a couple of things......

Marriage:

Patrick Carmichaell
Catharine Plenderlieth
proclamation: 4 Nov 1768
married:2 Dec 1768
Skirling,Peebles
* says Patrick from Biggan

The only birth I could find for either a Patrick or Peter Carmichael is the following;

Patrick Carmichael
born: 1 August 1719
father:James Carmichael
place born: Aberlour,Banff

Hope something helps, Kim

Further to your response:
Peter's first born is James.
The witnesses to Peter's Children's baptisms :
Helen Carmichael baptism witnessed by David Corcer a Stabler from Portsburgh and John Nicols a Labourer at Fountains Bridge.
Peter Carmichael baptism not witnessed.
James Carmichael the father is described as "James Carmichael in Drumablin"
Nothing found in National Records of Scotland .
No witnesses to James's children.
James marriage to Katherine Liddel  on 19/11/1737 first born James  3/11/1738 although Peter may not be the first child.
What lead me to James in Drumablin as Peter's possible father : Marion Foggo nee Carmichael claimed to be Peter's sister when making a claim against Peter's will in 1799. Her wedding cert to Andrew Foggo quotes he father as James Carmichael a Dyer in Skirling and James in Drumablin  is the only family I can find in the area with a daughter named Marion.
Thanks for your advise.

Thanks for your reply I have a copy of Patrick's wedding to Katherine Plenderleith.
The Patrick birth in Banf is too early

Hi, I knew the birth was on the early side but was thinking along the lines of perhaps James Carmichael having been married before, especially as you do not list a mother for the children. Just another idea. Kim

Thanks for this thought; the birth year for Patrick (Peter) is based on gravestone age at death therefore I think I need to keep looking.
Thanks again

Hi,
some information from "Carmichael a history of the parish and its people"
John Carmichael, the son of Thomas Carmichael, married Marion Alexander in 1697. They had four sons and two daughters born in Drumalbin by 1710, and a further son (James) to his second wife Margaret Paterson.
James Carmichael, son of John and Margaret, was a smith. He married Catherine Liddel (1713-1751) in 1737. They had one son and four daughters. He may have been the same James who married Jean Braidfoot and had four daughters born in Drumalbin between 1753 and 1761.
